Local women’s outfit Jerries’ Sisterhood on Friday celebrated its 10th anniversary, undertaking to continue with its quest to empower women.
The commemorations were held under the theme “10 Years Without The Women Thing”.
The outfit is a network of female entrepreneurs and business executives who interact and exchange notes on business, religious and social issues.
Founder of the organisation, Mrs Hilda Matanga, said the group seeks to emancipate and celebrate women’s achievements.
“Jerries’ Sisterhood (Pvt) Ltd is a ladies group which started with 40 women who interact on social, business and religious issues. We, therefore, intend to emancipate women so that they are able to lead wholesome lives.
“We will also take advantage of this forum to discuss issues pertaining to women, as well as celebrate and emancipate each other,” said Mrs Matanga.
Mrs Matanga said women bear the burden of providing care to their families, which can take a toll on their mental well-being.
“Globally, there has been a disruption to women’s access to sexual and reproductive health services and issues of gender-based violence are also affecting women’s success.
“Born out of idealism, Jerries’ has grown from strength to strength from 40 to about 100 like-minded women,” she added.
Jerries’ Sisterhood has local and diaspora members from SA, Kenya, Egypt, the UK, the US and Australia, among others.
