A leading opposition politician in Zimbabwe has vowed to expel Chinese investors who are “looting” the country if he wins presidential elections due in July.

BBC

“We will kick out the Chinese companies,” Nelson Chamisa was quoted by the privately owned New Zimbabwe news site as saying.

“We want genuine deals that benefit the people,” he added.

Mr Chamisa took over from Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai following his death in February, but his leadership is being challenged by a rival faction led by former Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe.

The June poll will be the first since the forced resignation of long-serving ruler Robert Mugabe in November.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa will contest the election on the ticket of the ruling Zanu-PF party.

He is a strong advocate of a “Look East” policy, but has also been wooing Western investors since taking office.

“I have seen the deals that Ngwena [President Mnangagwa’s nickname] has entered into with China and others, they are busy asset-stripping the resources of the country,” the state-owned Herald newspaper quoted Mr Chamisa as saying at a May Day rally.

“I have said beginning September when I assume office I will call the Chinese and tell them the deals they signed are unacceptable and they should return to their country,” Mr Chamisa said.

Some of these blunt statements may be a double-edged sword Mr Chamisa. It’s better to say some of the deals will be scrutinized for transparency instead of saying we ‘will expel the Chinese’. Hot all of the deals are bad the way I see it. Remember, China is no longer the China of the 1980s, of the Kung-Fu movies that had people, cars and buildings appearing too long and thin. China is now a power house that every nation on earth open for business is now taking China seriously. China is now such a vast market that if Zimbabwe were to get a deal to supply soya bean to that market for 5 years, tasimuka. Please be careful with your words Mr Chamisa.

Chamisa must avoid playing to the gallery. Remember you are in murky waters and fighting the crocodile. The murky waters are the crocodile’s territory. Chamisa must avoid too much interactions with the West. Even if there is truly nothing wrong with it, ZANU PF may use this effectively during campaigns in the rural areas. Chamisa must focus on practical, bread and butter issues such as how to fix pot-holed roads, how to make water clean in cities, how to revive the national herd, how to reduce corruption, how to ensure cash becomes available etc. Chamisa must avoid name calling and personal attacks let this be the way of backward politicians. If he raises the moral ground, ZANU PF will find it hard to resort to name calling and hate politics. MDC must also avoid holding crucial meetings in usual building as all of these are bugged. All members attending meetings must not have cellphones and must be stripped of gadgets that can record proceedings.

ADDITIONAL,CHAMISA MAY PREACH GNU,IT WILL WORK VERY WELL BECAUSE THE POVO WANT A GNU AND EVERYONE TO CONCENTRATE ON REVIVING ECONOMY.THE POVO WANT GNU BUT UNFORTUNATELY THEY ARE LIKE CHILDREN WHO ASK A FISH FROM THEIR FATHER,BUT THE FATHER GIVES THEM A SNAKE.THIS HAS BEEN THE TREND IN ZIMBABWEAN POLITICS.ZIMBABWEANS NOW WANT A FISH FROM THE GOVERNING PARTY/AUTHORITIES.PLEASE MR CHAMISA,WE LOVE/NEED YOU TO SHOW PRAGMATISM AND BE A UNIFYING FORCE.I THINK BABA TSWANGIRAI,S LAST IDEALOGY WAS TO RE-UNIFY MDC AND THEN UNIFY ALL ZIMBABWEANS.TIME FOR POLITICIANS WHO ARE NOT PEOPLE ORIENTED IS OVER NOW.JUST THINK OF OVER 3 MILLION ZIMS WHO ARE REFUGEES IN OTHER COUNTRIES AND NO POLITICIAN IS INTRESTED TO BRING THEM HOME.ZIMBABWE IS NOW A THE WORLD REFUGEE (BREAD BASKET).
