HARARE – The South African government is keeping a close eye on political developments in Zimbabwe, and apparently favours Vice President Joice Mujuru to take over from President Robert Mugabe rather than his wife Grace and Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa.
This is according to a respected South African foreign affairs analyst, who also says authoritatively that Pretoria believes that Zimbabwe cannot be saved while Mugabe remains at the helm of the country as he is seen as an insurmountable deterrent to critically-needed foreign investment to re-float the country’s collapsing economy.
“It follows that Pretoria therefore also seems to favour Mujuru as Mugabe’s successor because she seems much more likely than Mnangagwa would be to break with Mugabe’s fatal legacy and to … repair relations with the world.
“It is (however) likely that Mugabe would prefer to be succeeded by Mnangagwa than by Mujuru, to protect his legacy,” renowned writer Peter Fabricius said in an opinion piece he wrote for the SA Institute of Security Studies (ISS).
Fabricius, who pooh-poohed Grace’s chances of succeeding Mugabe, said Pretoria also believes that if the First Lady “really does have the large ambition to succeed her husband, she doesn’t have a hope in hell”.
“According to a government official, South Africa believes that ‘Zanu-PF is a serious party,’ and would not make such a frivolous decision as to elevate the untested First Lady — with no proven constituency of her own — to the top position. Pretoria seems to see a rather different scenario from other analysts, believing the pertinent question is not who is backing Grace Mugabe’s political ambition, but whose political ambition she is backing.
“’It’s going to depend on which side — Mujuru’s or Mnangagwa’s — Grace throws her weight, and whether she can develop a political constituency,’ the official said. The implication of this interpretation is that Grace — presumably coached by Robert — is trying to position herself to be an indispensable ally of whoever is in power when his wanes,” Fabricius said.
He added that whether one chose the more flamboyant dynastic interpretation — that Grace Mugabe cherished her own presidential ambition — or took the more mundane view that she was backing Mnangagwa’s ambition, the result could be much the same: to safeguard Mugabe’s legacy.
“That being so, the more Grace Mugabe succeeds, the more Zimbabwe will fail,” Fabricius concluded.

Mnangagwa,Mujuru and DR Grace they dont have the political mussle to take the country out of its mess.What is needed in Zimbabwe is a new name not from Zanu pf or all the MDCs.But a new political party with new blood and which can crop up support for the 2018 election.I dont see Mugabe leave the presidium in the coming congress.

Meanwhile Grace is preOccupied by taking over from the husband to safeguard their loot. Mnangagwa attends the Midlands and Masvingo rallies whereas Mutasa attends the Manicaland rallies. Mai Mujuru is quiet as a mouse. Grace is talking about taking power and not addressing the economic challenges like 96% unemployment, Electric Power Massive shortages, Poor health delivering system…poor remuneration for the few that are employed. Yes You Can Not Rig The Economy!!!!
What does it matter who SA prefers?? Surely it’s who the people of Zim prefer that should be ruling the country???
Ummmm according to Zanu Pf its not a matter of who Zimbabweans prefer its a matter of who can maintain the status quo. If it was about what Zimbabweans want then Mugabe would have left long back. As for S.A. they will not want to be seen to rock the boat so will support whoever is ‘said’ to be the president. Considering how much Zimbabwe has negatively weighed in on the progress of S.A. they would have pressurised Mugabe to go long back.

Do ma Zimbos ever say anything other than following those who have the powers to say something? When they try to talk through elections they are vetoed. So let SA say something. Who knows someone might listen. In any case they are our neibours. What happens in Zimm directly affects them like sewer flowing into your house from your neighbours burst pipes

Just listen. The leadership must not never be an individual thing. It must be a team thing. Look at the damage already inflicted by the individual MUGABE.
Lets have teams, institutions and mentorship. Lets identify our best thinkers, performers and groom these to run our country…not the persona like we have done with MUGABE. He spend much of his time scouring the internet looking for high sounding words to use in his speeches. Some have been recorded into listenable media materials, but where have his vocabulary taken us? NOWHERE!
Now he is putting forward the woman he is sleeping with as “leader in waiting”. He can’t do the North Korea thing because his sons are too young…hence mudzimai..Nxaaaa. This Grace thing!
I like the way Amai Mujuru is behaving, whilst Grace is talking, and Muchinguri etc, Mujuru never said anything. They is this saying, which says barking dogs seldom bite. To me she is now a veteran Politician, only one day, she prove Muchinguri and Grace are amateurs. Even Mnangagwa knows very well he have a mountain to climb.

We should free ourselves from the evil that’s ZANU before we even begin to care who our neighbours prefer as leader of our nation.
A nation can only call itself a nation if its people have a sense of freedom and sadly, that’s non existent in ZANU’s Zim.
South Africa is an economic power house in the SADC region if not all of Africa and cannot therefore be ignored.
Zimbabweans since 2002 have choosen MDC and Zanu PF has always succeeded in surpressing that wish through rigging and shambolic elections
Fighting to succeed Mugabe is to my mind like fighting to be captain of the Titanic.
The country cannot succeed with ZPF in charge – and let us remember very clearly that SA has always supported Mugabe and kept him and his thugs in power, from the days of Thabo Mbeki through to Zuma. And don’t forget the suppressed judicial report on those elections way, way back.
SA has NEVER been a friend to the people of Zimbabwe – ever.
If Joyce was clever, she should jump ship and form her own party. Her genuine motherly behaviour, maturity and acceptability across the board will win her any election against Mnangagwa and Tsvangirai. Just imagine party pay-off line ‘A new party, for a new Zimbabwe – Vote Joyce’. Kungotiwo as Zimbos, we all simply do not have any ‘balls’ just like Bob.
