SK Moyo fights for VP post

ZANU PF national chairperson Simon Khaya Moyo is scheduled to hold a meeting next week with provincial chairpersons and political commissars from the Matabeleland region amid renewed efforts to thwart his ascendancy to the vice-presidency by senior former PF Zapu officials eyeing that position.

Jostling for the vice-presidency has intensified ahead of the Zanu PF elective congress in December, with Home Affairs minister and politburo member Kembo Mohadi, Central Committee member Ambrose Mutinhiri, and Zimbabwe’s former Ambassador to South Africa, Phelekezela Mphoko throwing their hats into the ring to battle it out with Khaya Moyo. Zanu PF sources said this week Khaya Moyo will convene the meeting on September 7 in Bulawayo to consolidate his support base in the region.

“We have not yet been informed of the agenda but Bulawayo and the Matebeleland provincial chairpersons and commissars are supposed to meet on September 7,” said the source.

In an interview with the Zimbabwe Independent on Tuesday, Khaya Moyo refused to talk about the meeting.

“Who told you we are going to have a meeting? I am not aware of any such meeting,” said the party national chairperson.

Khaya Moyo’s prospects are being dealt a blow by some former PF Zapu who are now making an about-turn after endorsing him at a meeting at Twin Peaks outside Gweru on September 13 last year where they resolved to elevate him to be vice-president.
