via US: Incompetence the problem, not sanctions 28 September 2014
UNITED States ambassador to Zimbabwe, Bruce Wharton, has accused the Zanu PF government of failing to craft sound economic policies and always hiding behind the travel restrictions imposed on its leaders by the European Union.
Addressing journalists during a tour of the USAid-funded Mutema banana project in Chipinge West last Thursday, Wharton said the Zimbabwean economy had the capacity to turn the corner if President Robert Mugabe’s government introduced sound policies.
“Zimbabwe is a great country with potential to build its own good future. It has the capability and it has the primary drivers that are able to take the country to another level, but the problem lies in the policy and decision makers,” Wharton said.
He said the US remained concerned about Zimbabwe’s “huge democratic deficit” following last year’s disputed general election results.
“However, despite this, my country has continued to support Zimbabwe through assistance in agriculture, health, economic growth, education and other key areas, as well as humanitarian areas.
“In the wake of 2013 elections, we remain concerned the democratic process is still subject to political pressure. But at the same time, we don’t want to wait five years for another election to sort of go through this process again.”
Mugabe last Thursday told the United Nations General Assembly in New York that the US and the West should unconditionally remove what he called the “evil’ sanctions.
COMMENTS
Incompetence in all Zanu PF governments has been raised to an art form, with Mugabe approving even the most bizarre levels of incompetence. For example, he approved the award by the UZ vice chancellor of a Ph.D to Grace, thus, at one stroke, massively undermining the respect with which degrees from UZ are regarded.
Of course incompetence is the hand-maiden of corruption and the two always work as a pair. Nothing can get done because of incompetence, but if you can pay a bribe, then such obstacles can be overcome.
Owen, i don’t believe it is incompetence, i used to, i believe it is organized chaos. It is so the organizers can use this as a screen to utilize every skullduggery trick and excuse in the book to advance their personal interests. I recently heard that one of the globes largest commodity traders closed up shop as they just can’t get over the extent of the bribery, corruption and manipulations and believe it or not going to concentrate on their operations in the rest of Africa but mainly Nigeria. this one of the problems here not the saying of Zimbabwe’s Decade ‘it is SANCTIONS’!
Isnt a shame that’s.we are told the blatant truth by outsiders as if we not know whatvhas destroyed this country. There is incompetence and then there’s is the type that’s driven a leadership that does not know that they are useless at what they do. It gets worse when the same leaders think they defacate on your head and get away with it!

MC certainly paints a picture, the absolute truth too, they know they can get away with it because they always have!
Incompetence or gross corruption. I know what I go for – corruption as that is all zanupf have ever known.
Incompetence in dealing with sanctions, corruption and mismanagement. Competent in winning elections.
Competent also in frustrating the regime change agenda, at least this far. The bigger challange is dealing with the enemy within.
