British Think Tank Says West Should Re-engage Zimbabwe

British think tank, Chatham House, has released a report urging the West to re-engage Zimbabwe and not to wait for a change in the country’s leadership, in particular President Robert Mugabe’s successor.

The titled, ‘Zimbabwe’s international re-engagement: The long haul to recovery’, says Zimbabwe is facing a daunting but not insurmountable economic challenges that have to be addressed by the government in corporation with other local and foreign stakeholders.

The report calls for an end to all sanctions and so-called targeted measures, as well as a pragmatic dialogue that recognizes mutual interest and responsibility.

It further urges Harare to seek re-engagement in international diplomatic business forums and seek to rejoin the commonwealth.

Chatham house says for the nation to avoid an economic collapse, Zimbabwe should adopt policies to build international business confidence, improve its human rights record and reform electoral laws that have been a source of friction between Zanu-PF and opposition parties.

The 28-nation EU, which imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe in 2002 in protest at human rights abuses and violations of democracy under Mr. Mugabe, has gradually eased the measures over the last few years to encourage political reform.

The US government also imposed sanctions on President Mugabe and his inner circle in 2003. Harare maintains that the West is punishing it for its agrarian reforms that started in 2000.

Political analyst and director of the Media Centre, Earnest Mudzengi, said Zanu-PF has no option but to re-engage.

Europe is the one in need of engaging Zimbabwe before its economy collapses, not the other way round as they would like us to believe. With the war raging in Ukrain and all valves of economic cyphones from that country to the rest of Europe closed, these demons that feed on other countries’ blood and sweat are in need of spreading their economic thieving tentacles elsewhere and what better place to do so than Zimbabwe? For them to tell the world that Zimbabwe must engage Europe now in order to survive is not just funny but smucks of the same delussion with which Europe has cheated its way to prosperity over the years. Now with everyone aware of their cheating methods, Europe is going down and in a few years they will come to us with their begging bowls for investments and resources. We in Zimbabwe do not need to engage Europe at all. If Europe came now, they would claim that they rescued our economy when in fact we have the capability to do it ourselves. We do not need the same old lies from Europe, not any more!!!!!!

      Oi Nimrod,

Please arrange for a petition to be signed by Zimbabweans that states that Zimbabwe no longer requires any form of aid form Europe, including school fees.

Please do that. Western taxpayers are tired are throwing good after bad.

These think tank wonks tend to presume a degree of rationality that does not exist in the real world. Maybe they think ZANU can be dragged by the short and curlies to implement policies that are productive. Send them out here to live ZANU and their understanding can be improved

100% correct. Thy do not understand the evil and conniving and selfishness that is ZPF. It is like getting into bed with a black mamba for a companion and expecting to wake up in the morning; ask the MDC! God is the answer! Seek His ways and His wisdom. No repentance! No restoration!

They understand and know everything. They are after their own interests and not what most people believe. Despite being insulted at every occasion by Robert Mugabe about their own policies on even things that have nothing to do with Zimbabwe such as their policies on homosexuality the so called think tank dream of engagement. Engagement to do what? To beg Mugabe to stop insulting them and invite him for tea with the their queen every morning?

Chatham House calls for “dialogue that recognizes mutual interest and responsibility”??? Get real. This kind of dialogue was held repeatedly in the second half of the 90’s and Mugabe responded with the land invasions and massive human rights violations. These people have short memories. In the 90’s, the west thought it could negotiate with Mugabe because it had forgotten about the 80’s. Now, they want to talk to the stupid old man and his friends because they have forgotten the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Brain dead.

Chatham house is a well known Mugabe/Zanu apologist organisation. Reject everything they say, it emanates from the red brick building!
It is not even worth reading!

As usual that unusual fellow Nimrod opens his mouth and what comes out? Nonesense…All THE AFRICAN COUNTRIES THAT ARE ENGAGING THE WEST ARE STABLE. ie Botswana, South Africa to name just two. You don’t have to like a country to engage it.

      @Bazur Wa KuMuzi
If South Africa wasn’t stable – all the Zim Shona kwerekweres would not be flocking there, preferring to live under a Zulu/Nguni, President whilst running away from their own Shona President!!

At the moment South Africa is stable as stable as a lot of African countries can be.. note I say at the moment. The is no telling what the future holds if they follow Mugabes ways.

Only after self hidden interests. No engagement till zanupf is gone and we will engage who we see fit not to be dictated to by the Britieeesh. They have caused enough harm by placing Mugabe in power in the first place. They are just as bad as he is.
