The MDC-T confirmed Monday it is continuing to crack the whip on councillors who defied party orders during mayoral elections, with Gweru mayor Hamutendi Kombayi, his deputy Artwell Matyorauta, and councillors as the latest targeted casualties.
The Tsvangirai MDC formation confirmed Monday it is continuing to crack the whip on councillors who defied party orders during mayoral elections with Gweru mayor Hamutendi Kombayi, his deputy Artwell Matyorauta, and more than eight councillors becoming the latest targeted casualties.
The MDC Gweru provincial leadership met at the weekend and recommended the suspension of the mayor and councillors. The provincial executive is yet to finalize the matter.
The party says it has already suspended Mutare mayor and councillors on the same allegations of not toeing the party line.
A similar purge is expected in other local authorities, including Victoria Falls and Kwekwe.
MDC-T legislator for Lobengula, Samuel Siphepha Nkomo tells V-O-A’s Sithandekile Mhlanga he commends steps taken by the party to punish the councillors for not toeing the party line.
He says he hopes the purge will extend to other local authorities, including Bulawayo where councillors ignored the party’s directive and elected a deputy mayor of their choice.

yes we dont agree with undemocratic moves but these councillors caucused and put names forward, the present mayor was not put forward and a zanu deputy was certainly not.
The fact is ,Hamutendi Kombayi ,the son of Patrick Kombayi got elected to the position toatally against party policies.Firstly, an audit of his age will tell you that he is 36 years, below the 40 year age requirement.He finished O level at Gokomere High in 1993,A level at Chaplin in 1995.This is what we want to root out in the MDC.People want overnight glory which will not benefit the people but themselves.We strongly believe that a Mayor has to be respectable and has had enough time to learn and understand the city business.For Kombayi, straight from mining chrome and running a hotel, then desperately wants to be mayor,many questions will arise.This is the system that will eat us from within.So those who show impatience in their political development have to ship out.The same people can even sell out big time if they can do such a thing,hours after being entrusted by their disgruntled votwers to free them from ZANU PF canibalism
