Moz crisis: Zim can’t intervene, says Tsvangirai

via Moz crisis: Zim can’t intervene, says Tsvangirai | News24 2013-10-28

Former Zimbabwean prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai has said that Zimbabwe doesn’t have the capacity to intervene in the Mozambican crisis.

Mozambique plunged into chaos last week after the withdrawal from a 1992 peace deal by Renamo rebels.

According to a Newszimbabwe.com report, Tsvangirai said Mozambicans had the mandate to resolve the crisis through dialogue.

Tsvangirai’s remarks come after Zimbabwe’s deputy foreign minister Christopher Mutsvangwa indicated last week that his country was not going to watch as Renamo plunged the whole region into chaos.

Vice President Joice Mujuru also voiced her concern saying the developments in Mozambique were out of regional expectations.

Zimbabwe, which intervened in Mozambique in the 1980s to protect key trade routes, is concerned that a further unravelling of the situation would adversely impact an economy struggling to recover from a 10-year recession, according to the report.

Mozambique’s president, Armando Guebuza admitted that peace was under threat in his country.

If zanu pf think its going to b an easy war they have to think again. Let them go in and see what will b the end result. I’m sure some of our soldiers they want this government out that will b the starting point.

We can’t even tuckle the crisis in Zimbabwe, how can we poke our noses into other people’s affaires. After all they are a ‘sovereign’ state. Chinamasa knows what I’m saying.

    • comment-avatar

Just because you don’t have the education to realize that anything that affects a trade route is zimbabwes business doesnt give you the right to propose that Zimbabwe goes to sleep like you SADC above.

John, in case you are not aware of it, Zimbabwe has 2.2 million people without adequate food, never mind the fact that we cannot afford to provide clean water to our cities.

Mugabe loves the drums of war but he is currently nothing but a beggar. How would he fund a war in the jungles of Moz?

        • comment-avatar

Rudadiso I am aware of what the situation is in Zimbabwe, it is you that don’t understand or simply say the opposite because you support Tsvangerai.
things can get worse we are a landlocked country reliant on the trade corridors – we defend them or close down Zimbabwe its that simple.
This is not political it is about saving Zimbabwe and its future.

Are you so dull to an extent that you don’t realise there are some other routes that can be used than spending the little money we have going to a war that does not involve us? Where does Tsvangirai support come in here. We are threatened by dysentery because we don’t have enough money to buy water treatment chemicals and the cost of the chemicals are 10 times cheaper than going to war if you didn’t know.

          • comment-avatar

Jaluo one of us is dull and its not me the chemicals you speak of need the Mozambique corridors to get here.
terrorist problems there mean no chemical no matter what you pay.

Rudadiso, there is one thing all you guys are missing, look at the previous wars Zimbabwe has forced themselves into, they are all cased by people in power struggles. Now, the big question is, why were we in Mozambique in the 1980s? and why were we in DRC in the late 1990s?

Then lets ask ourselves, what did we gain? These are the questions to be answered first.

Then why do we want to rush into another conflict at this juncture when we are hungry?

Look, there are certain reasons hidden within Mugabe and ZANU (PF), that they rush to anywhere where ther is war. Mugabe uses these wars to cleanse him army of descent i.e. putting those soldiers who do not like his rule in the front-line of the battle which is the hottest, to die there. This help him stay in poor because he knows that disgruntled soldiers, holding guns, are a threat to his power.

This is supported by the fact that very war that was fought by Zimbabwe has brought no tangible results given the fact that the countries are still entangled in the same conflicts Zimbabwe had gone to help contain. So why did we loose our beloved sons and daughters, fathers, sisters, mothers, brothers etc in Moza and DRC? By-the-way, some never returned from Mozambique and DRC and no one knows where their graves are, their wives are still waiting for, albeit, loved ones/bodies………

It is very ironic and very funny at the same time. Zanu pf never ceases to amaze. When zanu maurdered over a million Zimbabweans between 2000 and 2009 through starvation and sewerage water, who came to fight them?. Was it not the Minister of propaganda, Patrick Chinamyass who was shouting of sovereignity?. For so long Zimbabwe was playing the SADC bully, this time if they invade Moza, like they did in the early 80’s, Renamo will take the war to Borrowdale, right in the statehouse.

That is what you get when elections cant be won, rougue elements resort to arms instead of the pen and ballot. After thousands die SADC comes to enforce talks. Why not ban dictators from AU and SADC membership they must Abide by SADC protocols for elections or loose membership. Zaup PF says Zimbabwe will not be taken by a pen it came by gun, FOOLS they want us to be another DRC, Mozambique or Somalia. Let power change hands peacefully for GOd and for posterity

Mozambique is a sovereign state, Renamo is for Mozambicans, why should ZANU PF think of joining force in that war. Its not an extension of Zimbabwe. Mugabe, Mutswangwa and ZANU PF spoke loudly about the matter of ‘sovereignity’. Double standards are not good Mutsvangwa, you can not go there. Besides in Mozambique there is oil and gas recently discovered, who knows if the ‘West’ is not involved there for regime change, but still its non of Zimbabwe’s problem but for Mozambicans to decide. Sadc did nothing when Mugabe and Zanu PF wage war against democracy in Zimbabwe, Mugabe preached to them of sovereignity, and they appears to have listened and let people suffered. They should still understand it like that.

You are war monggers, but be warned, these people are in their country and if you take them on, they will come to your doorstep. You hate Tsvangirai so much so that even if he were bring the solution to old age problem say, for instance, “a formula to avoid aging and death” you would tether die than use it because it was invented by your enemy. You sound like a ZANU PF big wing, good at rigging see, you bring in Tsvangirai to rig the debate and you call it arguments.

On a seperate note, the resurgency of Renamo Banditry means war is coming to Zimbabwe. Maybe ZImbabwe is the actual target whilst pretending all the while it is a simple Mozambican dispute. Lest we forget, Renamo was formed by the Rhodesian CIO boss Ken Flower as a counter-force to radical communism that was threatening imperialist interests. What has changed that over the years? Theimperialists are still there and fainting from hunger for resources, And ZImbabwe has the world’s qurter supply of diamonds, plus any mineral you want. To prevent Zimbabwe from going into Moza is to allow the imperialists to make a bed and sleep in your backyard, whilst they plan the next move. Renamo should be hit now, and hit hard. ZVekuti he-e soverenity chakuti chakuti, forget it. Tanzania has so far lost three soldiers in eastern DRC fighting the M23 rebels. What have you to say of Tanzanian sovereignity then? RSA lost fifteen soldiers in Central African Republic, where was RSA sovereignity then? Is there any National security without regional security? Lets think well, at the same time, lets also brace for tough times. Matsangaise might have one or two tricks up his sleeve and may decide to play them right here in Zimbabwe if ZNA decides to protect its trade routes.

Due to population starvation, few zimbabwean able bodied man can meet the requirements for conscription into the army. The general body mass index required to join the force cannot be matched by the malnutritioned population. A majority of potential soldiers left Zimbabwe in search of greener pastures, in Botswana, S Africa, Mozambique included. Renamo saw an opportune time to strike. S. Africa is preparing for elections soon, DRC is in permanent flames, Zimbabwe’s population is despondent to the current gvt only Zambia potrays some semblance of peace in the region. If any full blown war by the insurgents many occur, it is likely to be fought by black Zimbabwean mercenaries dotted across the SADC region particularily army deserters who still face uncertainity should they return to the country.

Mugabe has adopted many wars colonial-past whose economic impact has not been realised by the country. As much as we may talk, modern wars are generally convectional and destructive to infrastructure, humans and environment. Lets see if Mugabe and his coterie understand this. However Mutswangwa’s statement infers that the drilling of the soldiers for the execution of duty might be at an advanced stage. He was bold, we are lagging behind, we should be pondering which side of the boarder do we build the refuge camps.

Going to war in Mozambique is ridiculous for a country that can’t even feed its own people and provide them with basic services such as water and electricity. The United States and its allies are reeling financially from their middle-east adventures and these are the richest countries in the world. What more a poor, extremely ill Zimbabwe? Total, utter nonsense. They rigged the elections and now they are in power. All they can offer us now is a war against a rebel group across our borders. What idiots. When are we going to rid ourselves of those pathetic zanu-pf fools?

    • comment-avatar

I think you have got it back to front NMDJ – Zanu won the election the pathetic MDC lost and a few of the sore minority keep embarrassing themselves trying to find a reasonable excuse for defeat which doesn’t exist – now lets get back to the subject which is assisting Mozambique to protect our trade routes and show that terrorism will not succeed in SADC.

The Mozambican issue cannot be solved by anyone going to war even for Zimbabwe it would be a reckless undertaking. Dialogue is key, just shows you something has always been right in Mozambique. It was just simmering. Discontent was never dealt with but overlooked, while the Frelimo government went about their business they forgot about developing an inclusive structure for the betterment of all. When us Africans are in power we take it all we do not understand sharing, which brings everybody together as a nation. Mozambique will pay a heavy price if they fail to resolve this quarrel thru dialogue, lets not fool ourselves Zimbabwe can fix this.

@John…wasn’t decided to answer your comment or not but well I have never seen such lousy use of logic. Whites had farms in Zimbabwe, when they were taken did the British come in arms because they had interests in Zimbabwe…NO…why because according to ZANU, we are a sovereign state. So what’s the difference with Mozambique. Why do we have to be involved. Just because we have interests? Aren’t they a sovereign state as well!!!

Fungai, you need to think like your name, for the meaning of sovereignity go to New Oxford English Dictionary please. If you can not understand it please enrol in a school starting from grade 7, then forms 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 maybe you can start teaching us.

When you have a coalition government from two different parties that ate all from the same country, there is no violation of a nation’s sovereignity at all please, please, please.

Point of correction, the discussion is on the war in Moza and Zim’s intention to go and join the war under the pritex of defending our trade route particularly, the Baira corridor i.e. our oil pipeline and the road and railway line crossing Moza from our eastern border Mutare to the Indian sea port of Baira in Moza.

SADC we are not intending to go to war with Mozambique, there are some terrorists there called Renamo and we would simply be assisting their legitimate government which is what members of SADC are supposed to do.
