Mugabe overestimates his political influence April 3, 2014 NewsDay

Robert Mugabe miscalculated and overestimated his continental influence when he boycotted the Fourth European Union (EU)-Africa Summit hoping that other African countries would follow suit, the EU has said.

EU head of delegation to Zimbabwe Aldo Dell’Ariccia yesterday told NewsDay that the boycott was a diplomatic blunder by the 90-year-old President, who wants to be viewed as an elder African statesman in the same class as the late iconic former South African President Nelson Mandela.

“There was a decision by Zimbabwe not to attend the EU-Africa Summit thinking that other African States would back the boycott of the summit as well,” Dell’Ariccia said.
“But, unfortunately, that did not happen. At the end of the day, this comes as a major diplomatic setback for Zimbabwe.”

He also described Mugabe’s decision to boycott the summit, which opened in Brussels, yesterday as a “hiccup” which comes at a time the continental bloc was making efforts to re-engage with Zimbabwe.

Mugabe’s wife, Grace, was denied a visa by the EU to travel to Brussels for the summit and in retaliation, Zimbabwe boycotted the event.

The EU-Africa Summit brings together African and European leaders and is running under the theme Investing in People, Prosperity and Peace.

The summit will discuss issues of women and youth, education, legal and illegal migrant flows between continents and ways to stimulate growth and job creation, among others.
Dell’Ariccia said that it was unfortunate that Zanu PF had embarked on a campaign to discredit the summit in order to justify their stance.

“It’s unfortunate that we have a hiccup which has come as a result of the decision taken by the Zimbabwean government not to take part in the EU-Africa Summit in Brussels,” Dell’Ariccia said.

“A lot of false information has been circulated in the country to the effect that Sudan and Eritrea were not invited to the summit. However, both countries were invited as a matter of fact.”

Dell’Ariccia, however, said the EU remains committed to re-engaging with Zimbabwe despite the country’s decision to snub the summit.

He expressed optimism that relations between Zimbabwe and the EU would soon be normalised despite the misunderstandings.

“But for us, the process of re-engagement continues and we hope that we are going to have our relations normalised soon,” he added.

This year, the EU removed targeted measures on the remaining eight individuals in Mugabe’s inner circle and said they would resume full co-operation with Zimbabwe in November depending on events on the ground.

The bloc, however, maintained that Mugabe and his wife Grace would remain on the targeted measures list.

Dell’Ariccia, nevertheless, reiterated the EU’s commitment to assisting Zimbabwe in various sectors of the economy.

For any future leaders, surrounding yourself with “Yes-men” is great for the ego, but awful for leadership. A leader needs to stay in touch with reality, but “yes-men” isolate a leader from it. “yes-men” keep a leader from questioning his motivation and decisions… and with enough “yes-men”, every decision a leader makes, he sees as perfect. “Yes-men” hide or diminish the failures, so the leader begins to think he can do no wrong. And, “yes-men” are never questioned about their own activities, since they are given so much trust in exchange for their continued favor and grovel. “Yes-men” are the worst kind of faux-friends.

With Mugabe and the “yes-men” of ZANUPF, future leaders have a perfect example in Zim… of how NOT to lead a nation to freedom and prosperity.

Mugabe overestimates everything. The only thing he has underestimated is God’s wrath and judgment. it is a terrible thing for sinners to fall into the hands of an angry God.

“The summit will discuss issues of women and youth, education, legal and illegal migrant flows between continents and ways to stimulate growth and job creation, among others.’\” Does anyone think Mugabe wanted to discuss these sort of issues – I don’t think so. I think boycotting the summit on the grounds that Grace wasn’t invited was just a convenient excuse to stay away!
