‘Shame, shame, shame’ Mugabe tells U.S. and Britain

via ‘Shame, shame, shame’ Mugabe tells U.S. and Britain | Reuters By Lesley Wroughton UNITED NATIONS, Sept 26 2013

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe on Thursday berated the United States and former colonial power Britain and its allies for trying to control his nation and its resources, telling them to remove their “illegal and filthy sanctions.”

“Shame, shame, shame to the United States of America. Shame, shame, shame to Britain and its allies,” Mugabe, 89, said in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

“Zimbabwe is for Zimbabweans, so are its resources. Please remove your illegal and filthy sanctions from my peaceful country.”

Mugabe said the sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United States violated the U.N. Charter on state sovereignty and condemned them as a “foreign-policy tool to effect regime change”.

The United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Zimbabwean state firms and travel restrictions on Mugabe and dozens of his associates after a violent 2000 election, and at the start of sometimes violent seizures of white-owned commercial farms for black resettlement.

Mugabe did not refer to the lifting of EU sanctions on Sept. 17 against Zimbabwe Mining Development Corp., which will allow the diamond-mining firm to sell its diamonds in Europe.

He said sanctions constituted a form of hostility and violence against his government, which was only trying to redistribute land to the majority of landless Zimbabweans.

“Our small and peaceful country is threatened daily by covetous and bigoted big powers whose hunger for domination and control of other nations and their resources knows no bounds,” he said.

He said that if the sanctions were intended to unseat him from power “the results of the recent national elections have clearly shown you what they can do.”

Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980, overwhelmingly won a July 31 vote extending his 33-year rule. His main rival, Morgan Tsvangirai, denounced the poll as a “huge fraud.”

Washington has said the election was flawed and that it does not plan to loosen sanctions against Mugabe’s government.

Mugabe said the United States was determined to continue its “relentless persecution” of Zimbabwe, even though the African Union and other regional organizations had supported the election result.

“It appears that when the USA and its allies speak of democracy and freedom they are doing so only in relative terms,” Mugabe said. “Zimbabwe, however, refuses to accept that these Western detractors have the right to define democracy and freedom for us.

“We paid the ultimate price for it and we are determined never to relinquish our sovereignty and remain master of our destiny. Zimbabwe will never be a colony again.”

Zimbabwe is for Zanu-PF, not Zimbabweans. Zimbabweans are simply property to Zanu-PF. Too bad they are treated worse than livestock. At least a farmer cares whether his livestock lives or dies. Zimbabweans are still waiting for their sovereignty and to be liberated from Zanu-PF.

So, Mafirakureva, if we are economically independent, why is Mugabe always bleating about sanctions? He argues Zimbabwe is a sovereign nation at liberty to pursue whatever policies it deems fit, but conveniently forgets that, by the same token, the US and Britain are also sovereign nations free to choose who should visit their countries or who trade with.

There is nothing illegal about US sanctions on Zimbabwe because the decision came about after a law that was debated and enacted by congress. If Mugabe chooses to carry on as a dumb wit, that is how he will be treated by the world.

@Rudadiso,In short, Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, which deals with the actions of the Security Council in the interests of maintaining international peace and security, by definition disallows the right of countries, such as the U.S., to act unilaterally in imposing economic sanctions – an act of war – against another sovereign nation. This is why the “Dumb wit” as you so disrespectfully call him talks about the illegal sanctions placed on Zimbabwe. These actions were not sanctioned by the Security Council as mandated by the UN Charter, that the United States ratified after frying Hiroshima and Nagasaki (end if WWII).

You seem like an intelligent so and so, lets refrain from commenting on the intelligence of others…

Bhora, you obviously to not understand the UN statutes that you are referring to. Why do you reckon countries have visa regimes? Sovereign countries, including Zimbabwe, do decide who can or cannot be allowed to visit their countries.

As a sovereign country, Zimbabwe once drove a Cosatu delegation that included the ANC current Secretary General Gwede Mantashe to the border over night, even though the delegation had been granted visas to travel to Zimbabwe by our Embassy in Pretoria. Zimbabwe took a sovereign decision that at that particular point they no longer wanted the delegation to stay in the country. They couldn’t even allow them to take the next flight out.

Somehow, Mugabe believes he is so special that he can choose who should visit Zimbabwe but other countries cannot do the same.

Yes, I repeat, Mugabe is a dumb wit. You have to be a certified idiot to turn a country from a bread basket into a basket case and not be ashamed to buy maize from the very farmers you drove off the land. You also have to be a dumb wit to surrender your national resources to the Chinese and allow them to build on your wetlands thereby endangering your capital’s water sources.

        (c) MULTILATERAL FINANCING RESTRICTION- Until the President makes the certification described in subsection (d), and except as may be required to meet basic human needs or for good governance, the Secretary of the Treasury shall instruct the United States executive director to each international financial institution to oppose and vote against–

        (1) any extension by the respective institution of any loan, credit, or guarantee to the Government of Zimbabwe; or

        (2) any cancellation or reduction of indebtedness owed by the Government of Zimbabwe to the United States or any international financial institution.

If you havent spent the time to read ZIDERA, I suggest you keep quiet. For you information, the bill only talks about targeted restrictions in Section (6), the last section of a reasonably long bill. The rest relates to the refusal of direct credit, refusal to support any International Monetary support of projects in Zimbabwe etc….

You are the bigotted idiot. So ignorant…

        • comment-avatar

It sounds like you are the bigoted idiot who drank the Kool- Aid, because the US has said that they have never actually done what the above law instructs them to do in the event that Zimbabwe asks for money from either the US or any multi-national lending institution. So if the US has never actually denied money to Zimbabwe then why all the bleating from Mugabe and ZANU-PF about the horrible effects of sanctions for the last 11 years? Could it be that he’s just looking for a fig leaf to hide his own economic impotence?

Britain gave Zimbabwe Independence only to see Mugabe give it to the Chinese. If he really cared about the people of Zimbabwe he would have left years ago before he and his lapdogs destroyed everything. Mugabe, destroyer of a nation and a Country. Your legacy Robert is destruction, corruption and idealogical fraud and madness. Yes, begin preparing for the next election, remembering all the dirty (illegal) tricks ZANU has used to subvert the “free and fair” portion of what elections should be in a democracy. Do not be relaxed by the new ZANU party-line of “fighting corruption”. You know that’s designed only to cover and distract from the truth. Uncover corruption, and keep it in the news. Keep the people reminded of the “frog-march” scenes, the pre-marked ballots, the still-secret voter rolls. Be relentless regarding the truth about the sanctions. Challenge the lies of the spin-meisters at every opportunity. Continue to expose ZANU’s unlawful control of the distribution of inputs and aid. Demand public accounting for the proceeds from the minings. Press even more who has benefitted from land redistribution. Pressure over and over for top-level officials to make public their assets. Don’t let unfulfilled campaign promises be “swept under the rug” and forgotten. Keep everyone reminded. Keep asking where the businesses have gone. Keep the people thinking and talking. The news should be filled with reminders of how Zimbabwe once led Africa in education, infrastructure, agriculture, and jobs. Publicly remind Zimbabweans of how they have come to be jobless, hungry, fearful for their future… and afraid of the government.

Remember that the opposition, whoever leads it, must never sink to the level of ZANU intimidation, dishonesty, and illegal maneuvers… just keep exposing it again and again and again, and keep reminding the voters that it doesn’t have to be that way. “By the people, and for the people” is more than just a slogan.

Blah blah blah…. Mugabe sounds like a stuck record! Sanctions are on thieving Zimbabwe individuals and not the country! What has happened in Zim has been caused by unproductive farms, money from diamonds and other resources being stolen and disgustingly bad management of the country’s economy! Are people in Zim either too brainwashed by Zanu PF or too stupid to see what is happening right under their noses? Zimbabwe is being raped of all it’s resources and is being allowed to be colonised by the Chinese. Wake up Zimbabwe, the country belongs to the people and not to Mugabe, his thieving cronies and China!

“Zimbabwe will never be a colony again” – Mugabe recently said these words at the UN, however, he is too stubborn to understand Zimbabwe is already a colony again – A CHINESE COLONY and the Chinese are there to stay, Zimbabweans 50 years from now (in fact maybe in as little as 25 years from now) will no longer be eating sadza, they’ll be eating noodles or rice and working 7 days a week, and 12 hours a day – for their new Chinese masters. Watch this space – Mugabe by then will be long dead but he already knows deep inside himself, the Chinese have stolen Zimbabwe and all of its natural resources because of the ruthless Mugabe “Look East Policy”.

Collin Mackenzie, you are at liberty to love the incompetent octogenarian called Mugabe but stop making up stories. I do not look up to the British. All I do is wonder how a president with 6 university degrees can beg the Chinese to colonise his country.

You say the British and Obama must leave Zimbabwe alone but you do not seem to have noticed that neither Cameron nor Obama even mentioned the president of a beggar nation called Zimbabwe even though they have been feeding hungry Zimbabweans for over a decade.

So, Collin, you can hate Obama and the British all you want but it will not change the fact that Mugabe reduced a bread basket to a basket case. He is not ashamed to invite the Chinese to colonise Zimbabwe, de-industrialised Zimbabwe and rendered 90% of the country’s workforce jobless. So, go ahead and love him while he buys maize from the same people he drove off the land.

Well… Mugabe’s “sanctions” diversion tactics have been working on ZANU PF supporters (educated and uneducated, Zimbabwean and non-Zimbabwean) for years. So to him – why abandon something that works for him. With 35 posts above, they work in cyberspace too. AS most of us know, the crux of our problem is 1. An incompetent leadership which refuses to give in to the will of the people for alternative leadership or even leadership renewal at its top. 2. A populace at present too subdued to do anything but wait for Mugabe to die and hope things get better thereafter. This is where our attention should focus.
