‘We want people who do not complain’ – Mandiwanzira

via ‘We want people who do not complain’ – Mandiwanzira | The Zimbabwean by Adrian Mutigwe 22.10.13

Zimbabwe needs people who do not complain or threaten to kick out a government because there is no cooking oil,’ deputy Information, Media and Broadcasting Minister Supa Mandiwanzira said today.

Mandiwanzira was addressing media practitioners at a farewell function hosted for him by his radio station, ZiFM Stereo.

“I owe who I am to the people around me, the people who stood by me in very thick times, wh en everything seemed doomed and we could not pay rentals.

“They stood by us when we were four months behind in salary areas and they had to go and negotiate with their creditors including schools from which their children were being chased,” said Mandiwanzira.

He said people needed to persevere. “These are the kind of people we want in our country. Citizens who will not say, because there is no cooking oil in the shops and the country is not financially stable the government should be changed or kicked out.

“That is the spirit we want,” Mandiwanzira said.

The former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Services news anchor is the proprietor of ABC Communications owners of ZiFM Stereo that was awarded a broadcasting licence in controversial circumstances last year along with Zimpapers owned Star FM.

At the time Mandiwanzira denied any links with President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF but he went on to stand and won as the party’s candidate in the Nyanga South Constituency in the July harmonised polls.

Mandiwanzira said he will endeavour to be fair and balanced in his dealings with the media. “We now have an obligation to superintend over the broadcasting sector and all eyes will be on me to see whether I will be in any way disposed in a favourable way to ZiFM.

“I must say now that, if anything, ZiFM should brace itself because I am going to be harder on them than anybody else,” he said.

On the government’s directive regarding local content in the media Mandiwanzira said;

“There is no one who is against 75 per-cent local content but I must tell you than a lot of people are against 75 per-cent local trash on radio or television so we must endeavour to nurture artists and producers who bring quality programmes into our media.”

super mandiwanzira the people of Zimbabwe are not mindless zombies. We have a brain and if the government defaults on its election promises it will be kicked out. We will complain. That is democracy. The government is there to serve the people. the people are not there to serve the government.super mandiwanzira we are living in the 21st century not the middle ages. we have a voice and it wll be heard.

Being patriotic is to support the people, not the government. ZANUPF wants everyone to sit quietly while the people’s stomachs rumble with hunger. They want the authority, but not the accountability. But, it doesn’t work that way… the people WILL BE HEARD…!

  • comment-avatar

So Supa wants to be able to tell people how they should behave, both with his own voice and with ZIFM’s reach, but he doesn’t want to hear them tell him how to behave or what the government ought to do? That’s democracy ZANU-PF style! One way only, my way or the highway! There’s no give and take in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe! Just the people giving and ZANU-PF taking.

Every citizen of this country is entitled to criticize the government by virtue of the fact that – the government was voted into power by the people- or wasn’t it? Allow the people to express the government’s shortfalls- Unless of course this said government voted itself into power?? (..mmmm)

Mandiwanzira,is this the setup with your wife and children? No one complains in your family? If so then you are not fit to be a husband or father or minister. You are living in Cloud-Cackoo land!

I will not complain but comment. Gvt duty is to formulate laws and create a conducive environment for business to operate not to compete with the private sector. We have Supa who owns a radio station at the sametime decides who gets a broadcast licence. We are not fooled by your farewell talk to your fellow freebooters audience you want us to take leaf from. Well if your DJs rumble over cooking oil, advice, nuguru, tsuvu or amacimbi can be gathered in the countryside for their lunch boxes. There are reasons cooking oil would run scarce and we would not be complainig but asking the powers that maybe to act responsibly. When Manheru murders all the journalistic ethos in his Herald colum,” thou shall not speak”. At least there should be some proofreading. Will Zifm ever play i will not speak, manvenve etc. We demand justice and peace for both material and educational development for ourselves, children and future generations. Zanu pf’s kleptocracy is alarming, abanye bantshontha amafutha, your Djs tell you, the electorate demands social, political and economic justice they are denied by your party.

If you only select people who never complain, you will never progress at all.

Really, Mr. Deputy Minister. I guess the message is the same: don’t complain when state resources are looted and enrich the few, infrastructure is destroyed, your children are condemned to attend poorly staffed and resourced schools when the chefs can send their kids abroad. “Is good for African!” – African got no rights, let alone right to complain. If that be the case, why not be happy to persevere with 75 pecent local trash.
