Zimra goes after ZBC bosses

via Zimra goes after ZBC bosses | SW Radio Africa by Mthulisi Mathuthu on Friday, February 28, 2014

In what could be yet another act of mere witch hunting and not a genuine fight against corruption, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) is investigating ZBC bosses’ salaries to ascertain whether they paid their taxes in full.

The move follows revelations that top management at the state broadcaster were earning ‘corrupt salaries’ with the CEO Happison Muchechetere earning as much as $40,000 a month. Muchechetere and other senior managers are now on forced leave, but Information Minister Jonathan Moyo sacked the entire ZBC board.

The Daily News reported this week that Zimra, which is the national tax collecting body, sent a letter to ZBC demanding pay slips, employment contracts and payment schedules of its senior managers. According to the letter Zimra is demanding the payment schedules for the period February 2009 and December 2013.

Although generally accepted as a positive step in the fight against corruption, the move against Muchechetere and his colleagues is also seen as part of ZANU PF political infighting. Observers have queried why other culprits in corporate corruption, such as Presidential spokesperson George Charamba and former information minister Webster Shamu remain, untouched.

Charamba received as much as $100,000 for sitting on the Premier Medical Services Medical Aid Society Board in 2013 while Shamu, as information minister, was Muchechetere’s boss during the time he was earning a ‘corrupt salary.’

Charamba and Moyo are said to belong to a faction led by Emmerson Mnangagwa which is in competition with the one led by vice President Joice Mujuru in the succession battle. The two are believed to be behind the state media’s reports on corporate corruption with the aim of tarnishing members of the Mujuru faction.

Just whose side is the writer on? Whatever the reasons for ZIMRA’s actions let’s be pleased that the appropriate authorities are doing what needs to be done. Once a precedent is set than we can expect other suspects also to be investigated. There are splits & wrangling in both the major political parties who have proved they are not capable of uplifting Zimbabwe during the GNU. They are in it for themselves especially ZPF & to a lesser degree MDC. Only GOD can save us!!!!

For a start Zimra should be applauded for the move they have taken. Secondly that will set a precedent for future similar cases NOT forgetting that Gershem (DOSHRSHEM)Pasi is in the same boat. The writer is playing Party Politics which has nothing to do with the generality of the population. Chombo and Tendai Mahachi we are watching you ?

People should not waste time asking the obvious: We all know ‘Zimbabwe is a classical animal farm’, where ‘rule-of-the-jungle & survival-of-the-fittest’ have been institutionalized by ZANU PF, ever since 1980. And obviously in an animal farm, we all know how cardinal rule of how it operates. For the benefit of those who may not easily recall the rule, it is simply “All animals are equal, but others are more equal than others”. For those who know this ZANU PF truth, there is nothing to ask if one Muchechetere goes to jail, or better still to hell for that matter, while the more equal Charambas and Shamus go to heaven. Make no mistake, I only mean RGM and/or ZANU PF’s heaven. Remember many in the decayed party have declared RGM ‘son of god’ in other words a god – so certainly in that vein he should actually possess some kind of heaven of his own just as God does. It is the kind of heaven where the more equal ones will go while the less ones are sent to hell. Interesting isn’t it? But get me right, I’m not by any means sympathizing with these less equal thieves, far from it. They should go where they belong, only that I would be much happier if the more equal ones would meet a similar fate too. To hell with looters & thieves!
