Zimbabweans in the capital were amazed this afternoon to see their new President Emmerson Mnangagwa walking around the streets of Harare like an ordinary citizen – unencumbered by CIO details or other security personnel.
Mnangagwa is reported to have rejected the use of his predecessor Robert Mugabe’s expensive, bullet-proof Mercedes Benz S-600 Pullman limousine, is currently driving in a civilian second hand Mercedes Benz.
“President Mnangagwa walked past me today in his way to meet a Chinese business delegation. He politely smiled, greeted me and other journos. We are so used to being pushed aside by Mugabe’s security,” wrote Al Jazeera journalist Haru Mutasa this afternoon.
Mnangagwa has said that he is cutting down the number of government ministries in order to improve efficiency and cut costs.
