ZIMBABWEANS must unite to honour fallen heroes who brought the country’s independence, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe has said.

The country will celebrate Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day on August 11 and 12, respectively, under the theme “Zim@45: Devolve and Develop Together Towards Vision 2030”.

Minister Kazembe urged Zimbabweans to set aside their differences and celebrate together as one people with a shared history.

“This celebration reminds all of us in Zimbabwe that it was not easy. We gained our independence through blood,” Minister Kazembe said. “Some didn’t make it. Some are still living with injuries from the liberation struggle. The peace and tranquillity we enjoy today came at a cost, and that cost must always bring us together.”

The Government is currently finalising preparations for the Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day commemorations.

The main Heroes Day celebrations will be held at the National Heroes Acre.

“There is nothing new. The way we celebrated last year is exactly how we will proceed this year.

“All preparations are on course. Stakeholders, including widows and families of fallen heroes, have been invited. The inter-ministerial task force continues to meet regularly to ensure everything is in place,” he said.

The celebrations serve as a reminder of the values that brought Zimbabweans together during the liberation struggle.

The sacrifices made by the country’s heroes, Minister Kazembe added, should unite the country.

“We are where we are because of the liberation struggle. That shared history should bring us together.

“We should unite and focus on one thing, one national objective, just as our liberators did. They were united and focused, and they achieved the impossible.”

He added that Zimbabweans should now focus on economic development and national transformation.

“If we are to achieve complete independence, we must be as united as our comrades were,” he said.

“We want political independence, yes, but we also need economic independence. That’s why His Excellency, President Mnangagwa, came up with Vision 2030, which requires all of us to unite and focus.”

Minister Kazembe emphasised that everyone should play their part in driving the national vision.

“The heroes we remember didn’t fight for themselves. They fought for Zimbabwe, and so must we. Unity and focus are our greatest weapons,” he said.

“The past teaches us that unity defeated colonialism. Let that same spirit defeat poverty, corruption and division. Let us build a Zimbabwe that lives up to the sacrifice of its heroes.”
