HARARE – The number of foreign tourists visiting Zimbabwe are projected to
jump by around 10 percent on the back of the recent political transition,
the Zimbabwe Council for Tourism (ZCT) has said, putting the country
firmly on track for another record year for tourism.

“The previous year (2016) our target was 2,1 million tourists and this
year we have registered a positive growth to 2,3 million tourists.

“Now we are expecting 10 percent growth in 2018 as we bank on the positive
political developments that are taking place in the country,” ZCT
president Tich Hwingwiri said.

“ZCT is excited that the future prospects are much improved by recent
political changes, including the appointment of President Emmerson
Mnangagwa.

“Tourism must ride on the back of huge international visibility of late to
create awareness of its offerings as a leading African tourist
destination,” Hwingwiri said.

He said the ZCT’s undertaking was that in 2018 it will work towards an
acceptance that travel and tourism can and will become the country’s
leading economic sector by mid-century and that support needs to come from
all stakeholders to create an operating environment in which this becomes
possible.
