Human rights lawyer Douglas Coltart has said he does not hold, nor is he entitled to, British citizenship.

Coltart asserted that his ancestors first arrived in Africa in the 1600s after fleeing religious persecution in France.

If these details are correct, it would mean Coltart is a descendant of the Huguenots—a group of French Protestants who faced violent treatment because of their faith.

The Huguenots were French refugees who fled France over 300 years ago. Many settled in Southern Africa, becoming part of the region’s long-standing history.

Writing on X, Coltart stressed that, from a legal perspective, Zimbabwe is the only country on earth he can call home.

“I have no right to British citizenship. My ancestors first came to Africa in the 1600s as refugees fleeing religious persecution in France,” said Coltart.

“Legally, Zimbabwe is the only country on this earth I can call home. And I love Zimbabwe!”

The comments come after Coltart was assaulted and robbed of his phone and glasses by suspected ZANU PF activists during a heated public hearing for the Constitution Amendment Bill (No. 3) at the Harare City Sports Centre last Tuesday.

During the assault, some attackers reportedly questioned Coltart’s nationality.

One of the attackers has been identified as Luckmore Tinashe Gapa, a member of the ZANU PF Central Committee.

ZANU PF Treasurer and veteran politician Patrick Chinamasa claimed that Coltart was made to “atone” for the “colonial sins of his father”.

He claimed that the younger Coltart was being held accountable for the political legacy of his father, David Coltart, who is the current Mayor of Bulawayo and a former Cabinet Minister.

“As for young Doug Coltart, I regret that he has, most unfortunately and regrettably, inherited his father’s political Rhodesian Front genes,” wrote Chinamasa on X.

“How I wish he had moved to the left politically and become a ZANU-PF youth cadre.

“He is being made to unfairly atone for the colonial sins of his father, David Coltart, the current Mayor of Bulawayo City Council.”
