Mujuru’s popularity

While Mnangagwa, through Grace, is doing his best to block Mujuru’s advancement, her popularity with ordinary people appears undamaged.

With Mugabe in Vienna, Austria for UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, Joice as the only VP is the acting president. It might just be a question of allocation of duties, on the president’s part but, it was Joice who met the visiting delegation from the UK to discuss possible investment. It appears that the British Government’s position is ‘anyone but Mugabe.’

One of Mugabe’s foremost critics, Dr Ibbo Mandaza, certainly shares this view. Mandaza recently said “nothing can happen in this country until Mugabe goes.” At almost 91, Mugabe is nearing his political sunset and investors may be looking beyond his reign.

At the Zanu (PF) fundraising dinner attended by business representatives where, in a supposedly broke country, $1M was raised for the party’s congress, Mujuru was again at the helm, which begs the two-pronged question: is Mujuru only useful when Zanu (PF) needs a face which is acceptable to the business sector or is she already a shoe-in for State House?

The Zanu (PF) circus has resulted in economic stagnation. Two months ago, there was a lot of noise about ‘mega deals’ struck in China. None of that has materialised. The two million jobs are nowhere in evidence. Still, like witnesses to a vehicular collision, we watch, as blood reddens the scene.
