Former Zimbabwean prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai has said that Zimbabwe doesn’t have the capacity to intervene in the Mozambican crisis.
Mozambique plunged into chaos last week after the withdrawal from a 1992 peace deal by Renamo rebels.
According to a Newszimbabwe.com report, Tsvangirai said Mozambicans had the mandate to resolve the crisis through dialogue.
Tsvangirai’s remarks come after Zimbabwe’s deputy foreign minister Christopher Mutsvangwa indicated last week that his country was not going to watch as Renamo plunged the whole region into chaos.
Vice President Joice Mujuru also voiced her concern saying the developments in Mozambique were out of regional expectations.
Zimbabwe, which intervened in Mozambique in the 1980s to protect key trade routes, is concerned that a further unravelling of the situation would adversely impact an economy struggling to recover from a 10-year recession, according to the report.
Mozambique’s president, Armando Guebuza admitted that peace was under threat in his country.
