via Komichi tipped for MDC-T vice presidency 19 August 2014
THE Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) vice-chairperson, Morgan Komichi, is expected to join the party’s presidium at its October elective congress, NewZimbabwe.com has learnt.
The MDC is set to change its constitution and realign it with the country’s supreme law which accommodates two vice-presidents and Komichi is said to have pulled all stops to join Thokozani Khupe as Morgan Tsvangirai’s second top lieutenant.
Party officials said his ascendency is unlikely to be challenged given the role he has played in the MDC-T as it battles to topple President Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF party from power.
“He has expressed interest and almost everyone is backing him to take that post. He (Komichi) did a lot of work for the party from its infancy stages and no one is daring to question his credentials.
“In October, we want to build and rebrand our party and with people like our vice chairperson leading in the front, we can be a strong force in 2018.”
“There are several submissions forwarded by individuals, and the party will have to deliberate on that. But at the moment, the party constitution has not yet been amended,” he said.
“We will look at different submissions and come up with one report. If we agree on amending the constitution or not, we will do it fast before our October congress so as to give people time to campaign.”
“It is not about leaders choosing positions they want but they will be nominated by provinces. At the moment there is no official position regarding that issue (Komichi vice president push),” said Mwonzora.
