Gunmen of Mozambique’s former rebel movement Renamo on Saturday morning attacked the village of Matenje, in Chiuta district, in the western province of Tete, reports the Beira daily paper “Diario de Mocambique”.

The gunmen vandalized the police station, the health post and the administrative building in Matenje, which once housed the Renamo Tete provincial base during the war of destabilisation.

The Tete police confirmed the attack, but said nobody had been killed in the raid. Eye-witnesses told the paper that administrative staff in the village had fled to the small town of Kazula, about 45 kilometres away. They also said the Renamo attackers had seized a gun from the police station, but the police denied this.

Meanwhile ambushes have continued on the stretch of the main north-south highway between the Save river and the town of Muxungue, in the central province of Sofala. According to a Mozambican military source cited by the Portuguese news agency Lusa, on Friday Renamo killed two people and injured four others in an attack against a convoy.

The ambush took place in the Zove area, a few kilometres south of Muxungue, and one of Renamo’s favourite spots for firing on the convoys.

The target was a bus. A man and a woman among the passengers were killed, and four others were wounded.

Between Wednesday and Friday there were two attacks a day against the convoys.
