FORMER vice president Joice Mujuru says images of Zimbabweans being brutalised in South Africa have ruined the country’s 35th Independence celebrations as they show that “we have failed somehow”.

Mujuru, said although people should celebrate Independence Day “which came about through the sacrifice of many souls” the attacks on Zimbabweans in South Africa calls for “introspection of how far we have done against the plight of our people in South Africa”.

The former vice president lost her lofty party and government posts in December last year on allegations of plotting to oust President Robert Mugabe.

“Pictures from South Africa show the failure side of our government,” she said in an interview with NewZimbabwe.com.

“There is nothing to celebrate about here when our people are being butchered in foreign land all because we have failed to provide employment here.”

On Saturday, Zimbabwe marked 35 years of self-rule under the sole leadership on Mugabe.

The ageing leader is accused of destroying a once-promising country resulting in millions of its citizens fleeing to neighbouring South Africa where they are among many foreign nationals being attacked by locals who want them out.

Mujuru said although the country must celebrate “this important day”, government must act to create jobs for its people and save the lives of those scattered in foreign land.

“The people are suffering while we, the leaders, are busy fighting for power and prestige,” she said.

“We need to ask ourselves soul-searching questions about the welfare of our people. We owe it to them and those who sacrificed for this important day.”

Another fired Zanu PF politician, Rugare Gumbo, said many Zimbabwean’s are living in misery thanks to Mugabe’s misrule.

“Every citizen would want to be here, at home, on this important day,” he said.

But due to government’s failure to provide jobs and create the best economy, they are now being treated like slaves in South Africa.  Government must be ashamed of this.

“Energy is spent on power fights while the economy is dying. Our fellow Zimbabweans are being killed; it’s painful.”
