via Zimbabweans held over platinum in SA 31 July 2014
THREE Zimbabweans were this week arrested by South African police after they were found in possession of platinum worth about R50,000 in Northwest Province.
Police spokesman, Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone, said the three were arrested after a tip-off.
“Upon arrival at the identified premises, police allegedly found suspects busy melting platinum with an estimated market value of R50 000,” Mokgwabone said.
Police said the three suspects aged 19, 26 and 30 would be charged with contravening Section 5 of the Precious Metals Act, (No. 37 of 2005).
The arrest comes a few days after a Zimbabwean couple was arrested at the Beitbridge border post after they attempted to smuggle into South Africa six bars of gold worth an estimated R6 million.
