Letter 1. Subject Where we have hope
It's 2:00 a.m
UK time. I have just finished reading the book "Where we have hope" by Andrew
Meldrum. The book arrived this afternoon. As most will know, he is the
journalist who was recently expelled from Zimbabwe after 23 years of living
in the country.
It is available from Amazon and costs less than £10. I
would recommend it to all who love our country.
I would also recommend
it to those sceptics who do not believe that Mugabe will use food to win the
forthcoming elections. He has done it before and will not hesitate to do it
again. I would also like to point out that over the last five years or more,
none of my predictions of what Mugabe would do in the future have been
wrong.
I have also decided to buy a copy to send to my MP, together with
a covering letter.
Strangely, I never met Meldrum, though I was at
various events he covered. I feel very honoured that I was invited to that
amazing launch of the MDC in Chitungwiza, that now seems so long ago. I'm
also proud to have been involved in a small way when the MDC was being
formed, and to have served on one of the committees.

find myself spinning around in dizzy circles trying to keep up with all the
pronouncements and announcements by the Zimbabwean government on land. As a
farmer first I was told that the government didn't want our farm. Then I was
told by a bunch of loud and angry men armed with half bricks and sticks who
came to the gate that we had to share the farm with them. After seven months
of doing so the men decided that sharing wasn't good enough and that we
should get out of the house because they wanted that too. Their words were
not backed up with any government paperwork or orders but when the Police
said they wouldn't remove the trespassers because "it is political", there
was no option but to leave. Later the government said that any farmers still
brave enough to be on their farms should downsize and that all farms would
have a maximum hectarage. Then the government changed their mind again and
said that they were going to take even more farms. What started out as one
million hectares became 5 and then 11 million hectares. Now they've changed
their mind again.
Zimbabwe made international news this week with the
announcement by Minister John Nkomo that all land is to be nationalized.
Title Deeds are to be made null and void and the State will issue 99 year
leases for agricultural land and 25 year leases for conservancies. Minister
Nkomo said that the government did not intend to "waste time and money" on
disputes with people who had Title Deeds, Court Orders and other legal
documents which confirmed that they were in fact the legal owners of the
land.
What didn't make international news was the Acquisition of Farm
Equipment and Materials Bill. Despite the fact that the Parliamentary Legal
Committee unanimously declared 5 clauses of the Bill unconstitutional and
despite the fact that all opposition MP's walked out of the House in protest
when it came to the vote, the Bill was passed by Zimbabwe's parliament this
week. This Bill now allows the State to compulsorily acquire farm equipment
and materials and forbids farmers from selling, dismantling, removing
or destroying their own private property. This includes tractors,
ploughs, irrigation equipment, machinery, seed and fertilizer.
When
our farm was seized by arbitrary men at the gate, the government said they
were taking back land that had been stolen from them 100 years ago. When the
arbitrary men moved into and took over our private house, dairy, barns,
workers homes and the farm shop, the government said nothing, paid nothing
and did nothing and the police said it was political. It wasn't just bricks
they seized, it was fully functional and completely equipped buildings with
windows, doors, roofing, water tanks and geysers, electrical fittings,
fencing and security systems. Now apparently anything left on, or taken off
that farm that the Zimbabwe government classifies as agricultural equipment
or material, also belongs to the State. The mind just boggles at where this
highway robbery and blatant disregard of people's private property rights
will end and who or what will be next. Perhaps the shirt off my back, I did
wear it when I was a farmer; or what about my computer - I used that to do
the farm accounts and work out how much tax I had to pay the Zimbabwe
government when I was a farmer. The parallels with Jews in Nazi Germany 60
years ago are chillingly familiar. Love
cathy.

US issues Zimbabwe travel warning 10:02 AEST Sat
Jul 3 2004
AFP - The United States warned its citizens against the
risk of travel to crisis-ridden Zimbabwe.
"Zimbabwe continues to be in
the midst of political, economic and humanitarian crises with serious
implications for the security situation in the country," the US State
Department said in a travel warning.
"The Department of State warns US
citizens of the risks of travel to Zimbabwe," the advisory said, urging them
"to take those measures they deem appropriate to ensure their
well-being".
Zimbabwe has been reeling since Robert Mugabe's re-election
in 2002, which the opposition charges was rigged, and a series of economic
policies including land reform that have sent inflation soaring and left
millions in the country, once southern Africa's breadbasket, in need of food
aid.
Mugabe has steadfastly ruled out talks with the opposition, charging
that it was a front for Western countries bent on driving him from
office.
The State Department statement warned that Zimbabwe's
humanitarian crisis was expected to worsen in coming months and may lead to
possible large-scale migration of Zimbabweans to urban or border areas, with
further disruption and an increase in crime and
instability.
It advised Americans to avoid commercial farms,
especially those occupied by settlers or so-called "war veterans," who are
typically young government supporters acting allegedly with impunity outside
the law.
In 2002, US embassy staff members were detained and one was
beaten by war veterans on a farm near Harare.

Questions and Answers Regarding the Zimbabwean Work Permit
Holders in New Zealand
By Kevin List Brendan Quirk
the Chief Operating Officer of the New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS)
answered some questions relating to issues regarding Zimbabweans in New
Zealand. This issue has been around for some time but was brought up most
recently at last Thursday's hearing of evidence for Vote
Immigration.
Question: Could the NZIS clarify what the situation
is regarding the Zimbabweans currently in New Zealand - are they seeking
asylum? What exactly is their status?
Answer: The majority of
the Zimbabweans [referred to in the Estimates hearing of evidence for Vote
Immigration] are here on temporary work permits in New Zealand and are here
lawfully. Forcing the Zimbabweans to apply for asylum and go through the
Refugee Status appeals Authority is not appropriate. They are currently
working and the New Zealand Immigration Service would like to explore other
options regarding this situation.
Question: Are the UNHCR
involved in looking into the situation in Zimbabwe and advising
the NZ Government regarding that countries
continuing instability?
Answer: The UNHCR have not advised the
New Zealand Government regarding the continuing instability in
Zimbabwe.
Question: If the UNHCR are not advising the NZ
Government, who is, and how is the danger of returning to Zimbabwe
assessed?
Answer: The NZIS have received advice from the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and trade regarding the situation in Zimbabwe. [NZIS
referred Scoop to MFAT for any further details.]
Question: Are
the 1600 Zimbabweans members of a political party that will
guarantee they will suffer persucution should they return to
Zimbabwe?
Answer: The NZIS has not collected any information in
this regard [as the Zimbabweans are work permit holders and have not sought
asylum in new Zealand].
Question: Are the 1600 Zimbabweans
members of a religious group that means they will suffer persecution
should they return to Zimbabwe?
Answer: The NZIS has not
collected any information in this regard [as the Zimbabweans are work permit
holders and have not sought asylum in New Zealand].
Question:
If the Zimbabweans are neither members of a political or religious
group that will suffer persucution - what exactly is the reason that
their lives, wellbeing etc will be in danger should they return to
Zimbabwe?
Answer: [NZIS referred Scoop to MFAT for any further
details].
Question: Are the Zimbabweans able to bring family in
with them as work permit holders?
Answer: As work
permit holders the Zimbabweans in New Zealand have no absolute right to bring
in family members. There is however an ability for family members [of
Zimbabwean's in New Zealand] to apply for temporary visitors permits in
Pretoria.

Zealand currently.
Answer: The UNHCR has asked countries that
have signed conventions not to return people to Iraq at the present time
