THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a nationwide crackdown against crimes of concern and traffic offences, which has resulted in the arrests of more than 2 000 suspects.

The total number of arrests since the commencement of the operation on July 13, 2026, now stands at 2 069. Some of the suspects have since appeared in court, while others are still assisting police with investigations.

In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a nationwide operation targeting crimes of concern and traffic offences as part of its ongoing commitment to maintain law and order, protect lives and property, and enhance road safety across the country.

“The operation, which commenced on July 13, 2026, seeks to curb offences such as murder, drug and substance abuse, attempted murder, robbery, unlawful entry into premises, theft, stock theft, rape, kidnapping, smuggling and assault.

“The operation is also targeting traffic violations, including the use of pirate taxis or mushikashika vehicles, the use of unregistered or plateless vehicles, drunk driving, unlicensed drivers, dangerous overtaking, failure to obey traffic lights and other reckless driving practices,” he said.

Comm Nyathi said to complement the operation, the police had intensified patrols, roadblocks, stop and search blitz, compliance inspections and public awareness campaigns across the country.

“The public is, therefore, encouraged to observe the law, be responsible citizens and support police efforts in the fight against crime.”

Comm Nyathi said on July 14, 2026, a total of 1 809 arrests were made under the operation throughout the country.

These include 26 arrests for theft, 63 for unlawful possession of dangerous drugs, three for robbery, one for murder, seven for unlawful entry and theft, and one for stock theft, among other offences.

“The cumulative number of arrests since the commencement of the operation now stands at 2 069. The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to continue cooperating with the police by reporting criminal activities and traffic violations at their nearest police station or through the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631, WhatsApp 0712 800 197,” Comm Nyathi said.
