PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has challenged young women to fully embrace opportunities in skills development, entrepreneurship and market access, saying empowering women is key to strengthening families and communities.
Speaking at the second edition of the Young Women for Economic Development Business Convention in Harare today, President Mnangagwa said Government will continue implementing gender-inclusive programmes aimed at creating an enabling environment for women to participate meaningfully in economic development.
“Women are called upon to increase their productivity and fully embrace the opportunities available to them,” he said.
“When we empower women, we empower families, communities, and ultimately, our nation.”
The President said Government remains committed to scaling up programmes that promote women’s participation in skills development and entrepreneurship.
“We will continue creating an enabling environment in which women can acquire the skills, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive,” he said.
President Mnangagwa also challenged young women to take a leading role in driving innovation and industrial growth as the country pursues its Vision 2030 development agenda.
“I therefore challenge you, as young women, to be champions of innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrial growth,” he said.
“Let us harness your creativity, skills, and determination to drive economic transformation and contribute meaningfully to the attainment of Vision 2030.”
The President commended the growth of Young Women for ED, noting that the organisation’s contribution is increasingly being recognised nationally.
He said the organisation played an important role in mobilising voters during the 2023 Harmonised Elections, with some of those who participated subsequently winning elections and serving as councillors in their communities.
“The Young Women for Economic Development has grown significantly, and the impact of your work is now being recognised across the nation,” he said.
“This is commendable and a clear demonstration of the meaningful contribution that young women can make to leadership, governance, and national development.”
He urged Young Women for ED members to build on the progress made and use available opportunities to create jobs.
The Business Convention brought together young female entrepreneurs to exchange ideas, showcase businesses and explore opportunities for economic empowerment.
The event also provided a platform for Government and the private sector to engage young women on measures to enhance their participation in the mainstream economy.
