HARARE – Police have ordered a nationwide crackdown on vehicles being driven without registration plates and those fitted with unauthorised blue lights, sirens and other emergency-style equipment.
Police Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba has directed all police stations, districts and provinces to arrest motorists found violating the regulations and impound the offending vehicles.
In a statement on Tuesday, police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they were concerned by a growing number of motorists driving vehicles without registration plates.
“Some individuals are also fitting and driving vehicles with blue lights, sirens, bar lights, beams and other unauthorised gadgets, thereby posing as a danger to the maintenance of law and order in the country,” he said.
Police warned that driving without number plates or fitting vehicles with unauthorised blue lights and other gadgets was a serious offence.
“The Commissioner General of police has directed all police stations, districts and provinces to take stern action by effecting arrests and impounding all vehicles with no registration plates and those with illegal blue lights or fittings,” the statement said.
Police said officers would not entertain excuses from motorists caught violating the regulations.
The crackdown comes amid growing use of emergency-style lights and sirens on private vehicles, which can create the impression that motorists have police or other official authority to clear traffic.
Police said the enforcement drive was intended to strengthen the maintenance of law and order.
