Zimbabwe and Namibia government officials met in Harare last week to enhance regional cooperation and share best practices in road transport regulation and enforcement.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development hosted the Zimbabwe/Namibia Benchmarking Meeting.
The meeting, which brought together key stakeholders from both nations, aimed to enhance regional cooperation and share best practices in road transport regulation and enforcement.
The programme covered critical areas of mutual interest, including: the Road Transport Regulatory Framework in Namibia; Management and enforcement of overloaded vehicles, including weighbridge operations; Strategies to prevent trucks from bypassing weighbridges.
“Penalties and enforcement mechanisms for non-compliance; and Procedures for issuing work permits for foreign drivers and the regulation of special permits,” the ministry said.
The Zimbabwean delegation was being led by the Director of VID and RMT, Mr Allowance Sango, while the Namibian delegation was led by the head of delegation, Dr Cedric Limbo.
Also participating in the discussions were representatives from VID, the Department of Roads (DoR), ZINARA officials, the Department of Immigration, and other transport stakeholders.
This development comes after last year, when President Mnangagwa met visiting Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, with shared priorities in regional trade, diplomatic relations and co-operation taking centre stage.
The two Presidents, who met at State House in Harare, emphasised that regional trade would improve livelihoods and create jobs, thereby maintaining peace and stability.
