Zanu PF has embarked on a comprehensive review of its constitution to align the party’s founding document with recent amendments to the national Constitution.
The proposed changes are expected to be tabled at the ruling party’s National People’s Conference in Chinhoyi next month.
The review, which is being undertaken by the party’s Legal Standing Committee with technical assistance from Government departments, including the Attorney-General’s Office, is also intended to simplify the party’s constitution so that it can be easily understood by ordinary members.
Zanu PF Secretary for Legal Affairs Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi, who is also Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, said the review was being undertaken following a resolution by the party membership to align its constitution with changes introduced through the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act.
“The review of the Zanu PF Constitution was one of the resolutions passed by the membership to align it with amendments effected through Constitution Amendment No. 3,” said Cde Ziyambi.
“We have started the process, and our Legal Standing Committee has been working on the adjustments over the past week. We are reviewing our constitution to align it with the National Constitution.”
He said the proposed amendments would be presented to the Conference for consideration and possible adoption in accordance with the party’s procedures.
“We have undertaken a comprehensive review of the constitution so that it is easier for ordinary members to understand and not just legal practitioners,” he said.
The constitutional review comes as the ruling party intensifies preparations for its 23rd Annual National People’s Conference, which will be held at Chinhoyi University of Technology from October 12 to 17.
Cde Ziyambi also said the party had resolved that President Mnangagwa would remain its presidential candidate whenever the next Congress is convened.
Preparations for the conference are gathering momentum, with Mashonaland West having raised more than US$100 000 against a provincial fundraising target of US$75 000, said Cde Ziyambi.
Provincial chairperson Cde Mary Mliswa-Chikoka said hosting the conference was already generating benefits for Mashonaland West through various legacy projects.
She also called for greater commitment from party members and the cleaning up of the party’s membership database to strengthen its organisational capacity ahead of future elections.
The remarks were made during a meeting attended by Central Committee members, National Consultative Assembly members, Members of Parliament, and leaders of the party’s Youth and Women’s Leagues.
The meeting followed a tour of the conference venue by the Provincial Coordinating Committee led by Cde Ziyambi, a day after the National Conference Coordinating Committee, led by National Chairperson Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, inspected preparations.
