One dead, 3 injured as excavators torched at Mnangagwa son’s Shurugwi mine

GWERU – One person died and three others were injured in violence at Chenxi Mine Site Four in Shurugwi on Monday night, with five excavators set on fire, police confirmed.

National police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations were “currently underway in connection with the public violence” in the Wanderer mining area.

Police said more details would be released “in due course as investigations continue”.

Nyathi did not name the dead or injured or say who was behind the violence.

Chenxi Investments (Private) Limited, also known as Chengxi, is a Chinese-linked operation that is reported to be partly owned by Collins Mnangagwa, the twin son of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, in partnership with Chinese investors.

Mnangagwa is the company’s chairman.

Chenxi is one of the largest mining operations in Shurugwi district. It has run open-cast heap leach operations in the Wanderer, Boterekwa and Dunraven areas since 2021.

ZimLive understands the violence followed moves by the mine’s owners to evict artisanal miners working under Marufu Sithole at Wanderer and Chris Mahara at Boterekwa.

Neither Collins Mnangagwa nor Chenxi had responded to requests for comment by the time of publication.
