On the morning of Sunday 3 August 2014, Zimbabweans must have thought they had been kidnapped in their sleep before being dumped in North Korea. The Standard carried an article with the heading ‘Youths Push For Robert Mugabe Jnr.’
A week earlier, the country had woken up to the news that Grace Mugabe’s name had been ‘put forward’ for consideration for the position of Women’s League chairperson. There was a stampede by senior Zanu (PF) officials to endorse Grace who reacted with fake modesty – talking about she would have to ‘consult’ before accepting the position.
Leader of the war veterans association, Jabulani Sibanda, did his bit to hype Grace ahead of the Women’s League congress. Sibanda likened Grace – the former mistress, home-wrecker, Mazowe land grabber and ‘don’t take photo’ screamer – to a nun, not just any garden variety nun but Mother Teresa herself. Grace has been 1st lady for 17 years. One wonders why the likes of Sibanda waited until now to pontificate about holy mother.
It seems that Mugabe not only intends to rule until he is embalmed but beyond that he plans to create some sort of chieftaincy, where members of his family take turns to have Zimbabwe as their personal property. When a gold-plated throne was presented to Mugabe on his 90th birthday, it seemed an excessive gesture but now perhaps the intentions are clear.
Mugabe has spoken lately of the founding principles of Nkrumah and other leading African emancipators. What he conveniently fails to see is that he has completely betrayed the core principles of the liberation struggle, which are democracy and fairness. In 1975, if the Zipra and Zanla combatants had told the mothers and sisters who cooked for them that they were fighting to ensure that they could rule forever, they most likely would not have served them even one morsel of sadza.

Political heavyweights from the women’s league of Zanu pf from all of the country’s provinces urged the First Lady, Mai Grace Mugabe to take the leadership of the women’s league. These are real Zimbabweans doing their own thing, doing what they want without asking for permission from any foreigners. Surprise, surprise, foreigners who should not have anything to do with Zimbabwe, let alone its politics are up in arms!!!!! In 1980, a few short months after Independence Day, Robert Mugabe signed an agreement with the North Korean President Kim Il Sung to have the North Korean military train a brigade for the Zimbabwean army. Training of the 5th Brigade lasted until September 1982. The objective of the 5th Brigade was to crush the people of Matabeleland, force them to submit to Mugabe’s Zanu PF and relinquish their loyalty to Joshua Nkomo’s Zimbabwe African People’s Union (Zapu).
The infamous red-bereted 5 Brigade were soldiers equipped with unusually cruel skills. We learn through the ‘Breaking the Silence’ report that the methods used to address “reorientation”, “change”, “unfounded grievances” – methods designed to teach a community to “accept defeat” – included civilian murders, civilian rapes, civilian torture and the destruction of civilian property.
The report describes in detail some of the techniques used, and it’s important to understand that all the techniques were calculated to maximise terror, pain, grief and humiliation. The soldiers, under Mugabe’s instruction, set out to injure and mutilate human beings, to kill them, but to do so in such evil cruel ways that the scars would be indelibly etched in memories for generations to come.
Mugabe intended to leave this civilian population with fear for the rest of their lives, for the horror to be so great that they would pass the fear down to subsequent generations. This is how he believed he would manage discontent in the region, and hold onto power indefinitely.
When the soldiers were first deployed in Matabeleland, the shock was significant and the impact immediately felt:
“Five Brigade passed first through Tsholotsho, spreading out rapidly through Lupane and Nkayi, and their impact on all these communal areas was shocking. Within the space of six weeks more than 2000 civilians had died, hundreds of homesteads had been burnt and thousands of civilians had been beaten. Most of the dead were killed in public executions involving between one and 12 people at a time.”

It is not true that there were true sanctions against Rhodesia, whether UN or bilateral. during the Murderous Smith Regime. UDI was a British ploy to hold on to our beloved country and not some Ian Smith inspired rebellion against the British. Ian Smith would not have lasted a month if the British truely wanted to end his rule. Instead, British companies found brisk business in the country whilst other countries thought they were on the same leaf with the British. The British helped Rhodesia in its sanctions busting and supported every economic development in the country. Today, our small country is being ganged against by the might of the whole United States of America, the whole of Europe and that country of Convict Ancestry – Australia. The scorn is simply based on the fact that Zimbabweans have reclaimed their land and natural resources. If the same sanctions were to be imposed on any other African country, I bet that country would not survve for six months but Zimbabwe has defeated the decades old sanctions.
How many hundreds of thousands of our people were killed during the colonisation of our country by the butchers from Europe? How many millions of Africans were killed by the Butchers from Europe during the mass colonisation of the African continent and Slavery? And Dube and Doctor do little, you have the baldness to suggest that people were killed in Matebelelande simply because of racism? How many people did Ian Smith murder in Zimbabwe whilst trying to defend Rhodesia? Even the so called Gukurahundi Matebeleland murders did not count for much until Mugabe started the land reform policy. That is when we began to see the trumpeting of the issue. No problem about the human rights abuses in Soudi Arabia and other undemocratic countries in the Middle East as long as the oil continues to flow to the United States and Europe at give away prices. I personally am a happy avenger of my forefathers for I am proudly occupying the land from which my ancestors were forcibly removed in 1919 to make way for the white murderers who had just returned from serving in the British army during First World war, with blood drooping from their trousers and beard. The sanctions are good in a way for they have helped turn most Zimbabweans who a while ago were brain-tuned to believe that only the white man can own factories and industries, to become entrepreneurs in ther own right. Go to the tobacco auction floors and see that all those selling millions and mllons of dollars of tobacco are blacks whereas only 10 years ago only white farmers used to sell tobacco. A revolution has taken place in our country and those trying to resist its advancement will, just like the stupid Rhodesians, be swept aside and those who fail to make way will be crushed like small ants.

UN sanctions are global; whilst bilateral sanctions are not – this is a fact. China is the second biggest economy in the world and it has no sanctions on Zim; what then is the problem? It does not matter that there was sanctions busting. The effect of “sanctions busting” is exactly the same as the fact that Zim today trades with just about every country in the world; so this largely equalises the playing fields – Rhodesia vs Zim; so why is Zim in ruins compared to Rhodesia?
Zimbabwe has never been banned from importing oil (the main driver of economic activity in any nation); whilst Rhodesia was, but Zimbabweans ended up buying fuel for their vehicles in Botswana and South Africa; carrying drums and drums as private citizens – something that never happened in the hey days of oil sanctions in Rhodesia in the 1970s – how do you explain this? Yes, we had fuel shortages, hence the then Rhodesian government slogan: “Don’t drive Rhodesia dry” – but we never as individual citizens had to import drums of our own as has been happening in this gukurahundi Zimbabwe of yours.

Nelson Mandela warned, as the then SADC chair of the impending disaster that was about to befall Zim when Mugabe ignored him and sent troops to the DRC. This was even before the madness of the land invasions.
You have to accept that Zim’s problems are essentially self-imposed and are not entirely caused by sanctions; they have been caused by farm grabs/land invasions that destroyed the Agro/Agricultural sector – Zimbabwe’s then economic mainstay. You destroy farms you must understand that the downstream and upstream linkages are automatically destroyed. Hence all the seed manufacturing industries suffered. The Banking industry suffered as they could not recover their loans, and so on and so forth. Furthermore other causes were mismanagement; corruption; the DRC war; War Veterans demands; Fiscal indiscipline on the part of government; violence that destroyed property and infrastructure; racism and tribalism.
How do you expect a country to be able to beat sanctions and succeed when the government itself cannot live within its own means? Ian Smith drove himself to work; Robert Mugabe is followed by a motorcade of a legion of hangers on; what do you expect, in a country with an economy less than a third of that of the City of Durban? Mugabe goes on numerous unnecessary foreign trips with hundreds of hangers-on with unbudgeted foreign currency – this is a waste. There is no money going into fixed investments; everything is spent on recurrent expenditure – much of it that can be done away with. Does Zim need a Cabinet of over 40 ministers; two-vice Presidents; numerous deputy ministers and Provincial Ministers? Huge outlays on Mercedes Benzes and other perks?
There is no amount of sanctions-blaming that will ever improve the dire straits that Zim finds itself unless you change tak and look at the man in the mirror – it is you the gukurahundis who have caused all this; not the west!!

The black African population grew exponentially under successive colonial administrations because of the improved health standards brought by these administrations. Go back and do some research; calculate population growth rates between 1800 and 1975 – you will see how much of an intellectual midget you are. I dont know how old you are; but have you ever tried to compare, contrast and understand the magnitude of sanctions imposed on Rhodesia and those imposed on Zimbabwe? Are or were they of the same magnitude?
Again, do you know that there is a difference between UN imposed sanctions and bilateral sanctions? The former are of a global nature, whilst the latter a between individual nations that decide to participate in them against the target country; in this case Zim – do you know this?
If you understand these differences; can you please explain how come the Rhodesian economy consolidated; new industries were built and thrived under global UN sanctions which even targeted Oil imports; whereas in Zim, with only a few Western countries participating and Zim left to trade internationally with all the other countries not subscribing to these sanctions, the whole economy has been decimated; how come?
If you can answer these questions honestly to yourself and in your heart of hearts you surely know your gukurahundi fathers have been a total disaster. The cause of this disaster you also know it – leave Obama alone!!

Willowgate was a 1988-89 Zimbabwean political scandal in which the Bulawayo Chronicle revealed illegal resale of automobile purchases by various government officials. The ensuing investigation resulted in the resignations of five members of President Robert Mugabe’s cabinet. One of the five, Maurice Nyagumbo, later committed suicide after being charged with perjury. The reporters who had broken the story, Geoffrey Nyarota and Davison Maruziva, were subsequently removed from their posts.
In October 1988, member of parliament Obert Mpofu accidentally received a check from a car company in Willowvale, an industrial area of Harare; the check had actually been intended for Alford Mpofu, a friend of Industry Minister Callistus Ndlovu. Obert Mpofu took the check to Geoffrey Nyarota, editor of the state-owned Bulawayo Chronicle. The paper had already built a reputation for aggressive investigations into corruption at all levels of government, and began to investigate.
In the weeks following their discovery of the check, Nyarota and deputy editor Davison Maruziva learned that ministers and officials from the government of President Robert Mugabe had been given early access to buy foreign cars at the Willowvale assembly plant.[1] In some cases, the cars were bought wholesale and resold at a 200% profit.[2] Implicated ministers included Ndlovu, Political Affairs Minister Maurice Nyagumbo, and Defense Minister Enos Nkala. The newspaper published documents from the plant to prove its case, including identification numbers from the vehicles.

Not only were these two incidents at the helm of corruption breeding in the country, there was also the Senior Civil Servants’ Housing Scheme, which saw non-civil servants benefitting from the loans that were availed by the government to assist its own poor masses.
Large sums of cash were looted by top government officials and although a handful non-civil servants benefited, no action was taken against them and by doing so, it increased the rate of corruption which has now spilled into the 21st century at an alarming rate.

UN sanctions are global; whilst bilateral sanctions are not – this is a fact. China is the second biggest economy in the world and it has no sanctions on Zim; what then is the problem? It does not matter that there was sanctions busting. The effect of “sanctions busting” is exactly the same as the fact that Zim today trades with just about every country in the world; so this largely equalises the playing fields – Rhodesia vs Zim; so why is Zim in ruins compared to Rhodesia?
Zimbabwe has never been banned from importing oil (the main driver of economic activity in any nation); whilst Rhodesia was, but Zimbabweans ended up buying fuel for their vehicles in Botswana and South Africa; carrying drums and drums as private citizens – something that never happened in the hey days of oil sanctions in Rhodesia in the 1970s – how do you explain this? Yes, we had fuel shortages, hence the then Rhodesian government slogan: “Don’t drive Rhodesia dry” – but we never as individual citizens had to import drums of our own as has been happening in this gukurahundi Zimbabwe of yours.

Nelson Mandela warned, as the then SADC chair of the impending disaster that was about to befall Zim when Mugabe ignored him and sent troops to the DRC. This was even before the madness of the land invasions.
You have to accept that Zim’s problems are essentially self-imposed and are not entirely caused by sanctions; they have been caused by farm grabs/land invasions that destroyed the Agro/Agricultural sector – Zimbabwe’s then economic mainstay. You destroy farms you must understand that the downstream and upstream linkages are automatically destroyed. Hence all the seed manufacturing industries suffered. The Banking industry suffered as they could not recover their loans, and so on and so forth. Furthermore other causes were mismanagement; corruption; the DRC war; War Veterans demands; Fiscal indiscipline on the part of government; violence that destroyed property and infrastructure; racism and tribalism.
How do you expect a country to be able to beat sanctions and succeed when the government itself cannot live within its own means? Ian Smith drove himself to work; Robert Mugabe is followed by a motorcade of a legion of hangers on; what do you expect, in a country with an economy less than a third of that of the City of Durban? Mugabe goes on numerous unnecessary foreign trips with hundreds of hangers-on with unbudgeted foreign currency – this is a waste. There is no money going into fixed investments; everything is spent on recurrent expenditure – much of it that can be done away with. Does Zim need a Cabinet of over 40 ministers; two-vice Presidents; numerous deputy ministers and Provincial Ministers? Huge outlays on Mercedes Benzes and other perks?
There is no amount of sanctions-blaming that will ever improve the dire straits that Zim finds itself unless you change tak and look at the man in the mirror – it is you the gukurahundis who have caused all this; not the west!!
Your juxtaposing of the tribal wars of the 1800s against the 20 000 Mthwakazi villagers killed by the Gukurahundis in the 1980s is to say the least, primitive. You talk of Zim’s population remaining at 13 million and blame that on whites, you are a fool; a very ignorant and uneducated one too. When whites colonised Africans and founded Rhodesia, the black African population was in hundreds of thousands if not less; not the current 13 million, if you did not know this.
The black African population grew exponentially under successive colonial administrations because of the improved health standards brought by these administrations. Go back and do some research; calculate population growth rates between 1800 and 1975 – you will see how much of an intellectual midget you are.
