THE Zanu PF provincial executive council in Masvingo has summoned ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Mr Walter Mzembi to appear before it before a final decision is made on whether to readmit him into the revolutionary party.
Mr Mzembi was expelled from Zanu PF in 2017 and applied to rejoin the ruling party this year. The former Zanu PF Masvingo South legislator also served as Tourism Minister and was a senior member of the ruling party in Masvingo province before his expulsion.
The provincial executive council wants him to explain the social media posts that he allegedly posted about the ruling party.
Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chair Cde Robson Mavhenyengwa said Mr Mzembi did not turn up for the meeting where he had been summoned.
“We had summoned him to appear before the party provincial executive council meeting where we wanted him to explain himself over some social media posts attributed to him that were critical of the party,” said Cde Mavhenyengwa.
“He did not turn up for the meeting ostensibly because our secretariat failed to reach him, but we hope that he will appear before the provincial executive council during our next meeting.
“He applied to rejoin the party and during deliberations to determine his application it emerged that he was posting some undesirable social media messages so we resolved to have him come and explain himself and we will wait for him.”
The Zanu PF Masvingo chair dismissed some circulating social media messages claiming that Mr Mzembi was cleared to rejoin the party.
“We only resolved to recommend the readmission of Cde Kudakwashe Gopo of Bikita, but with (Mr) Mzembi we are not done yet,” he said.
If the Zanu PF Masvingo leadership decides to readmit Mr Mzembi, they will make a recommendation to the ruling party national leadership before his readmission is formalised.
