FORMER acting Mutare town clerk Tinashe Mtetwa has been suspended for being absent without leave (AWOL).

Last week, Mtetwa was also suspended as the acting town clerk after he called off interviews for the position at the last minute despite that the council had spent thousands of dollars booking a venue at a local hotel.

Mtetwa, who is a water engineer at the Mutare City Council, was last week suspended from the engineering department by the director Maxwell Kerith for not reporting for duty for five working days.

NewsDay was told that Mtetwa’s whereabouts were “unknown”.

Acting Mutare town clerk and finance director Blessing Chafesuka yesterday confirmed the development to NewsDay.

“After he was suspended by Mutare mayor Blessing Tandi, he was ordered to return to his engineering department, but refused and has not been reporting for duty,” Chafesuka said.

“He has not been picking instructions from his boss (Maxwell Kerith),” he said.

Mutare mayor Blessing Tandi suspended Mtetwa after he illegally cancelled the town clerk’s interviews.

Mtetwa claimed that he was not consulted about the interviews.

He was reportedly backed by Mutare City Council deputy mayor Farai Bhiza.

At that time, Mtetwa challenged Kerith, saying he could not report to him as he was the acting town clerk.

Mutare City Council is yet to appoint a substantive town clerk since the death of Joshua Maligwa who succumbed to COVID-19 early this year.
