Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals’ Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Ward has been elevated to world-class standards, with extensive refurbishment under the Presidential Hospital Renovation Programme expected to improve maternal health outcomes.

This was revealed during a monitoring and evaluation tour led by Prevail Group of Companies, where Government delegates were shown the modernised facility. The visit highlighted the partnership between the Ministry of Health and Child Care and private contractors in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in line with Vision 2030.

Speaking on the sidelines of the tour, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals clinical director and acting chief medical officer, Dr Tonderai Mangwiro, said the refurbishment had expanded critical capacity and would enhance maternal healthcare delivery.

“We are very glad that the work is progressing well, and we thank the team that came for monitoring and evaluation to see how things are going. Mbuya Nehanda is an important maternity hospital in this city: 265-bed capacity, 14 000 deliveries annually, 40 percent of them by caesarean section,” he said.

Dr Mangwiro explained that the refurbishment had increased theatre and high-dependency unit capacity, enabling healthcare workers to provide improved care to patients.

“This refurbishment has increased our theatre capacity and our high-dependency unit, where very sick women are treated. We believe these enhancements and additional equipment will help our staff to work better and improve outcomes for our patients,” he said.

The project will strengthen the hospital’s ability to manage complicated pregnancies and critical maternal health cases.

By the end of September, building equipment and elevators are expected to be installed as part of the ongoing modernisation programme.

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals is also benefiting from a monthly donation of 1 500 hampers valued at US$27 000 from Prevail Group of Companies.

The company’s chief executive officer, Ms Tendai Sithole, said the modernisation works represented a transformative development for the country’s healthcare sector.

“We are very proud to be part of such a game-changer in the medical fraternity across the country. We have managed to modernise Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital with facilities such as a state-of-the-art HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system, which is a very high-spec air conditioning system that allows different temperatures within the same wards,” she said.

Ms Sithole added that the refurbishment had modernised the hospital’s flooring and redesigned some wards to meet contemporary healthcare standards.

“Prevail Group is proud to be part of such an impressive and life-changing initiative spearheaded by our President, His Excellency Dr Mnangagwa. We have also modernised the flooring and partitioned some of the wards to suit modern-day designs and accommodate more patients,” she said.
