THE Zimbabwe Defence Forces is taking bold steps in its commitment to women empowerment, gender equality and diversity within its rank and file, a senior officer has said.
Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) Director General Administration, Air Commodore Morris Mujikwa, made the remarks yesterday while presiding over the graduation of 40 non-commissioned officers who completed a senior management course at Manyame AFZ Base in Harare.
The sentiments come as the Government has made huge strides in empowering women economically, addressing gender-based violence, while also ensuring gender equality and empowerment to achieve sustainable development by 2030.
Air Commodore Mujikwa said the organisation will not back down on empowerment as women are an important cog in the institution.
“I am confident that you are experiencing a blend of emotions on this momentous day as you are finally graduating,” he said.
“I believe that your time at the school of academic and staff training has been a transformative journey. You arrived with the belief that you knew it all, but the experience has shown you that learning is a continuous process.
“You have discovered new insights, expanded your knowledge and sharpened your skills, all of which will serve you well in your future endeavours.”
Air Commodore Mujikwa said the ZDF has shown commitment to gender equality and diversity by having 13 female students for the course.
He called on the graduates to continuously study as a way of countering evolving problems associated with today’s high-tech world.
“As you embark on the next chapter in your careers, I encourage you to embrace the spirit of life-long learning.
“Continue to seek out new opportunities to grow and develop and never stop challenging yourself to be the best version of yourself.”
The students were taught subjects that include computer application, civil-military relations, management principles, basic military law, service writing, aviation safety, drugs and substance abuse and international humanitarian law.
In addition to the curriculum, the students also visited the Parliament of Zimbabwe, Chinhoyi Caves, ZPC Kariba and Lake Harvest as part of learning.
The students also held a culture day under the theme, “A multi-cultural experience: Highlighting the fusion of cultures”, meant to familiarise them with various Zimbabwean cultures.
