TWO Harare men appeared before Mutare magistrate Sekai Chiundura on Tuesday facing charges of contravening the Mines and Minerals Act after they were allegedly found in possession of six suspected pieces of diamonds.

James Kavhira (33) and Landwell Kanyerere (33) of Borrowdale were not asked to plead to the charge.

They were granted $100 bail each and remanded to August 28.

The State alleges that on July 18 this year, the suspects were spotted by police detectives picking up an unidentified man who had disembarked from a Mbada Diamonds company staff bus at Mutsago Business Centre in Marange and driving off towards Harare.

The detectives immediately alerted their colleagues who were manning the highway and the suspects were arrested at a police checkpoint at the 22 Miles tollgate on their way to Harare.

Police allegedly recovered six suspected pieces of diamonds from Kavhira’s jacket and the latter claimed to have obtained the stones from a Mutoko miner whom he could not identify.

As part of their bail conditions, the suspects were ordered not to interfere with State witnesses and report once a fortnight at Borrowdale Police Station.

Really? What about the top dogs that are stealing millions of dollars derived from the diamonds & not paying taxes? What’s their court date?
