At least 288 families are set to benefit from nine blocks of flats in the National Building Society (NBS) housing scheme in Glaudina, western Harare, as Government scales up efforts to provide affordable housing to the majority of homeseekers.
The building society is complementing Government’s efforts to help the country to deliver 220 000 houses and flats by next year, in line with the National Development Strategy 1.
Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony for the two blocks of flats in Glaudina, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister July Moyo urged building societies to provide affordable houses to the people and continue providing effective public-private partnerships that can drive national development and address issues of housing.
Two blocks of flats of 64 units out of nine blocks of 288 units were commissioned last week.
All the blocks are set to be completed within two years.
“Our building societies must go back to the basics, must build houses to give mortgages and give affordable terms for the benefit of not just the upper middle income earners, but also the medium income earners so that our people can be better housed.
“Today’s commissioning is a tangible manifestation of the principles enshrined in NDS1.
NBS managing director Sifiso Mahlangu said the Glaudina project would reduce the housing backlog and support Government’s vision.
“We are confident that the NBS Glaudina flats project will become a beacon of excellence in residential development, setting new standards for quality and innovation in our industry,” he said.
