COMMUNITIES in Binga are set to benefit from a US$82 000 irrigation project targeting villagers in Lungwalala,Kariangwe, Tyabaand Nabusenga in ward 2 Sinansengwe.The project is funded by the CAMPFIRE Association in partnership with the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation area (KAZA TFCA).
The project is set to benefit more than 340 farmers with a combined harvest of more than 600 tonnes of maize expected this season.
Addressing stakeholders and farmers gathered for 2022 Field Day at Lungwalala Irrigation Scheme in Kariyangwe on Tuesday, Binga District Agritex officer Pedias Ndlovu said the project will empower the marginalised Binga communities.
“We want to thank CAMPFIRE Association of Zimbabwe for the KAZA TFCA funded project and the assistance they rendered to Binga communities.The project will contribute towards poverty alleviation, increased household income and will ensure food security,” Ndlovu said.
The project which runs under the theme ”Impact Mitigation Measures For Rural Communities” is aimed at boosting household food security.
There is a similar project in Thsolotsho and Bulilima districts targeting an estimated 250 smallholder farmers.
