CDE CEPHAS NCUBE from Bulawayo province was yesterday overwhelmingly elected the new chairperson of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA).
Cde Ncube trounced the outgoing chairperson Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa, outgoing secretary-general Cde Victor Matemadanda and Cde Albert Ncube (Matabeleland North) during an election held at the association’s elective congress at the ZANU PF Convention Centre in Gweru.
Cde Ncube garnered 294 votes, while Cde Albert Ncube was second with 90 votes.
Cde Matemadanda and Cde Mutsvangwa came third and fourth with 75 and 11 votes, respectively. Cde Shorai Nyamangondo was elected vice chairperson unopposed.
Other members of the executive are Cde Joel Murerengwa (Secretary-General), Cde Thomas Manyima (Legal Affairs), Cde Vincent Chinone (Transport), Cde Section Ncube (Finance), Cde Sanik Nguni (Security), Cde Nyembesi Togara (Women Affairs) and Cde Samuel Parirenyatwa (Political Commissar).
In his acceptance speech, Cde Ncube said he was elated to be entrusted to lead the association and promised to represent all war veterans.
“I am very happy with the trust that has been bestowed on me by my fellow comrades and I promise to work very hard with everyone as we take our association forward.
“I will soon be engaging everyone so that we remain as vibrant as before as an association,” he said.
Cde Matemadanda said they accepted the results and will work with the new executive to steer the association forward.
“I want to firstly thank all the comrades for the support they gave us for all these years when we were in the executive; we will continue to work together as an association, advocating for our welfare and everything else,” he said.
ZNLWVA last elective congress was held in Masvingo in 2013, where Cde Mutsvangwa and his executive were elected.
The association is supposed to hold a congress every five years in line with the association’s constitution.
However, the one scheduled for 2018 was shelved to focus on the harmonised elections.
It was later postponed once again because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
