SUNGURA musician Tichaona Chacha has pledged to establish a music studio at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison aimed at assisting inmates to rehabilitate through the healing power of music.
Chacha’s announcement came during a tour of the prison facility on Tuesday, where he was joined by fellow artistes Jah Prayzah, Mbeu, Seh Calaz, Jah Signal, Simon Mutambi, Dadza D and Philip Gwaka, among many others.
Kessia Masona, popularly known as Muchaneta, cheered the inmates up with her energetic acts.
The artistes went to prison to instil hope in the prisoners and inspire them that they can have a better future in music.
Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, Chacha said: “The inmates need to know that this (imprisonment) is not the end of the road. Time will come, they will be released and we will be waiting for them. By establishing this studio, we can provide a chance for redemption, hope and positive transformation.”
Chacha’s commitment to social responsibility is evident in his decision to invest in the prison’s music programme.
“The studio will offer music training, recording facilities and performance opportunities for the inmates,” he added.
This will provide inmates with a constructive way to channel their emotions and energies.
Chacha envisions the studio as a beacon of hope, empowering prisoners to express themselves and develop skills that can aid in their rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, former inmate Philip Gwaka, who is preparing for an album launch this month, emphasised the need for inmate support systems upon release.
“It’s heartbreaking to see fellow inmates return to crime due to lack of acceptance from their families and communities,” Gwaka said.
“Initiatives like Chacha’s studio can provide a vital lifeline, helping them to reintegrate into society.”
The tour also highlighted the prison’s hidden gem, the picturesque Chikurubi Damview, which offers recreational activities such as boat canoeing, ziplining and quad biking.
This scenic spot has the potential to generate revenue and promote community engagement.
The studio project is expected to commence soon, with Chacha working closely with prison authorities and stakeholders to ensure its success.
