A DELEGATION from China’s Jiangsu Province, which arrived in Zimbabwe on Monday, yesterday handed over a borehole to Glenwood Primary School in Harare in a development expected to improve access to clean water by learners and staff.
This comes after the Chinese province signed two Memorandums of Understanding with the Airports Company of Zimbabwe on Monday to improve Victoria Falls International Airport infrastructure.
Speaking on behalf of Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo, director for Secondary Education in the ministry, Dr Patrick Ngandini, said the initiative augments Government efforts to provide essential services in schools.
Named the International Living Water Project, Dr Ngandini said the initiative will see the installation of state-of-the-art boreholes in schools across Zimbabwe, prioritising areas hardest hit by water shortages.
“This borehole is part of our broader vision of ensuring that all learners have access to basic commodities such as clean water, which are fundamental to their health, development and academic performance,” he said.
“These are not merely wells, they are lifelines. Each borehole represents a sustainable source of clean water that will serve not only learners and staff, but also surrounding communities. This initiative, generously sponsored by the Jiangsu Provincial Government of the People’s Republic of China, represents not just infrastructure development, but a flowing symbol of the enduring friendship between our two nations.”
Minister Moyo praised President Mnangagwa for his leadership in strengthening ties between Zimbabwe and China.
“I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the pivotal role of His Excellency, the President of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, in both maintaining and strengthening our relationship with China. His visionary leadership has not only cultivated robust diplomatic ties, but has also facilitated numerous development initiatives that directly benefit our citizens,” he said.
Jiangsu province was commended for its unwavering support and highlighted the significance of a recent high-level visit by the provincial delegation.
Minister Moyo said Jiangsu province has exemplified the spirit of partnership in Zimbabwe and Chinas’ bilateral relations.
The visit by the Jiangsu provincial delegation, led by Mr Ma Xin, further solidified this special relationship and laid the groundwork for the transformative project.
The installations have been carefully planned based on need, with a focus on environmental sustainability and technical efficiency.
Chargé d’Affaires at the Chinese Embassy in Harare, Mr Cheng Yun, underscored the importance of such projects in building lasting ties between the two nations.
“These facilities are a symbol of the deep-rooted friendship between China and Zimbabwe. We are committed to supporting infrastructure that uplifts communities and enhances education,” he said.
In addition to the borehole, learners at Glenwood Primary received schoolbags, hampers and bottles for juice — much to the delight of both learners and parents in attendance.
