THE Sino-Zimbabwe bilateral relations continue on an upward trajectory with the Asian giant spreading its footprints in the country with major investments in the area of agriculture, mining and national security taking shape on a huge scale, an official has noted.

Speaking at a Public Policy and Research Institute of Zimbabwe (PPRIZ) event on Friday in Bulawayo, the institute’s researcher, Dr Ronald Chipaike highlighted the far-reaching impacts of China’s relationship with Zimbabwe saying the relationship is central to the country’s economic and social development.

Dr Chipaike said Zimbabwe has been working with the Chinese Government from the time of the liberation struggle which ushered in Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980.

“The strength of the China-Zimbabwe relationship is not just a matter of Government policy, but a reflection of the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations. From educational exchange to cultural events, the people of Zimbabwe and China are forging lasting bonds that will continue to drive co-operation and understanding in the years to come.

“The benefits of the China-Zimbabwe partnership are wide-ranging and have a direct impact on the lives of everyday Zimbabweans. With China as the country’s largest source of foreign direct investment, the economic opportunities for growth and job creation are immense,” he said.

Dr Chipaike said China was a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

“China donated millions of doses of vaccines and provided protective clothing. It was because of those donations that Zimbabwe managed to contain the pandemic, limiting the number of cases to under 26 000 infections and about 5  600 deaths,” he said.

He emphasised that as the country moves forward under the Second Republic, the relationship with China is critical in achieving the ambitious vision for the country’s development by 2030.

“With China’s support, Zimbabwe is poised to take a giant leap forward in its journey towards a more prosperous and secure future,” he said.

Dr Chipaike said China’s support for Zimbabwe’s security apparatus, including the donation of military hardware and the construction of the National Defence University, underscores the importance of maintaining stability in the country as it seeks to build a brighter future for its people.

“In the area of security, China has invested in Zimbabwe’s defence sector, providing equipment and expertise to support the country’s military and police forces. This investment has not only improved Zimbabwe’s ability to maintain stability and protect its citizens but has also helped to build trust and co-operation between the two nations,” he added.

He pointed out that the developments brought by China opened job opportunities for Zimbabweans.

Dr Chipaike said China’s steel manufacturing plant in Manhize will provide jobs for 5  000 villagers, a significant boost to the local economy and job market.

“This support extends to the education sector, with China offering scholarships through the Chinese Ambassador Education and Culture Exchanges and Research Centre for students at various levels,” he said.

He said with the Second Republic focused on building a more prosperous and stable Zimbabwe, the continued support and investment of China will be critical in achieving this vision.

“As the two countries deepen their economic, cultural and strategic ties, the future looks promising for both Zimbabwe and China. The China-Zimbabwe relationship is more than just an alliance of convenience; it is a partnership of mutual benefit and respect,” he said.
