PRESIDENT Mnangagwa is expected to officially launch a new prepaid water distribution network in Chinhoyi today, as Government steps up efforts to address the town’s longstanding challenges.

The launch, which takes place as ZANU PF concludes its 23rd National People’s Conference, follows the President’s directive on September 14 for the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works to intervene in the water crisis affecting the Mashonaland West provincial capital.

In a statement yesterday, Permanent Secretary for Local Government and Public Works Engineer Tafadzwa Muguti said the project has seen work commence on replacing ageing water infrastructure, with local contractor Helcraw Water appointed by the Ministry to undertake the works.

Eng Muguti said Chinhoyi has more than 107 kilometres of asbestos water pipes dating back to the colonial era, which have contributed to persistent water supply challenges.

The local authority has been struggling to replace the ageing network, leaving close to 40 000 households without reliable access to water.

“Since the project started, more than 3 500 homes are now getting clean, treated running water,” said Eng Muguti.

The development has brought relief to residents, some of whom had gone without supplies for more than 30 years.

The intervention is part of broader efforts to address infrastructure gaps inherited from the colonial era and improve the delivery of essential services as Government pursues its development agenda that leaves no one and no place behind. Experts say Chinhoyi’s water challenges have highlighted the need for sustained investment in urban infrastructure, particularly as population growth places pressure on existing water and sanitation systems.

The replacement of old pipes is expected to improve the reliability of water distribution, reduce leakages and help expand access to safe water for households that have endured years of shortages.

The prepaid water distribution network is also expected to introduce a different approach to water management, with the system designed to link water consumption to payments.

Its implementation is expected to be accompanied by measures that protect access to safe water and ensure that vulnerable households are not left behind.

The 23rd Zanu PF National People’s Conference has brought national attention to Chinhoyi, leaving lasting infrastructure improvements.
