CHITUNGWIZA Municipality has extended its 30 percent discount promotion on outstanding bills, which started in March, to 30 May 2026, following numerous requests from residents.

In a notice, acting town clerk Mr Japson Nemuseso said when the promotion was first introduced in March, many residents welcomed it and made efforts to clear their arrears.

“Some managed to pay during this period, while others were unable to do so due to various challenges.

“In response to these concerns, the council has decided to give a final extension of the 30 percent discount to allow more residents to benefit and clear their outstanding balances,” read the notice.

Mr Nemuseso said the extension provides a last opportunity for all residents with arrears to settle their accounts at a reduced rate.

“Timely payments of rates is important. It helps council to improve revenue collection, reduce salary backlogs and deliver better services such as refuse collection and road maintenance,” read the notice.

Mr Nemuseso said any arrears not settled by May 30, 2026 will revert to the original amounts owed.

“After this date, the council will begin full enforcement measures. These measures may include penalties, interest charges and legal action to recover the debts,” read the notice

“Residents are therefore strongly urged to act now and avoid additional costs and enforcement action.”
