CHITUNGWIZA Municipality has urged residents to desist from depositing foreign objects into the town’s sewer systems, which have been causing blockages and damaging manholes, exposing families to health risks and disrupting service delivery.

This follows the discovery of grass and other foreign objects in a sewer manhole at 31 Rukukwe in Zengeza 1, which were blocking the free flow of sewerage and causing a backup in upstream houses.

“Our sewer system is designed to carry wastewater only, not grass, rags, sand, animal skins, dead animals, pampers or any other solid waste,” read a statement issued by Chitungwiza Municipality.

“When these materials are forced into manholes or flushed into the system, they cause blockages, overflows and costly repairs that affect the entire community.”

The municipality said it is profoundly disturbed by the discovery of infant bodies in the sewer system- a tragic and painful reminder of how critical it is to safeguard its infrastructure and humanity.

Chitungwiza Municipality spokesperson, Mr Tafadzwa Kachiko, said in November last year, they found the body of an infant in an enclosed manhole in Zengeza 5 in Ward 6 during a routine sewer deblocking exercise near Mutowe and Msasa.

“The matter was handed over to the police for full investigation,” he said.
