A German non-governmental organization (NGO), Welthungerhilfe, is implementing an empowerment initiative targeting youths in Chegutu.

The project is implemented in partnership with the World Food Program (WFP) with financial support from the USAID.

Chegutu domain resilience officer for the Urban Resilience Building Project, Aleck Muzenda told NewsDay that they were targeting 80 youths under a pilot programme.

“Most youths are indulging in drug abuse, theft and robberies because of unemployment and unable to generate income for their own livelihoods. We saw it necessary to offer skills training to the youths so that they can generate their own income to sustain themselves,” said Muzenda.

“We are training the youths to ensure that even when the financial assistance ends, there is continuity and that families have sources of income and can sustain their lives.”

Youths drawn from 6 wards in Chegutu are undergoing training in motor mechanics, bricklaying, wielding, cosmetology, tourism and hospitality and hairdressing at Mupfure Vocational Training College.

The beneficiaries are also undertaking training in poultry production and detergent making.
