A BULAWAYO family is appealing for financial assistance to enable their two-year old daughter to undergo an operation for an eye cancer ailment.

The family is now homeless after selling all their belongings in a desperate search for treatment. It is seeking about US$4 000.

Sethukile Nkomo, the grandmother of the minor, poured out her heart to Southern Eye in a desperate plea for financial and medical assistance.

“Last year, on her birthday on July 5, we noticed that her eye was getting unusually big, and we took her to Pelandaba Clinic,” Nkomo said.

“She received some medication, but her condition did not get any better and she was transferred to Richard Morris hospital where they admitted her and performed surgery on her.”

Her condition did not improve until laboratory tests confirmed that she had cancer of the eye.

“She was then transferred to Parirenyatwa hospital for chemotherapy, however, they struggled to treat her because they said there were complications with her veins,” Nkomo said.

“She was not getting any better until she ended up crawling like a baby because she grew increasingly weak.” Mpofu said the illness has left her broke after selling household property and the family was evicted after failing to pay rentals.

“I am appealing for help from well-wishers for my grandchild to get medical attention.”

The mother of the child, Matron Ndlovu, was at a loss of words, crying throughout the interview.
