GMB introduces medical aid for farmers

The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) has introduced a medical aid scheme for farmers to ensure their well-being given their strategic importance to the nation.

The parastatal’s corporate communications officer Mr Joseph Katete yesterday confirmed that his organisation now had a medical aid scheme for farmers under Agrimed. “We introduced a medical aid scheme for farmers under Agrimed, which started as an in-house scheme for GMB workers in 2000 before we recently expanded it to cover our farmers,” said Mr Katete.

Mr Katete said his organisation was cognisant of the fact that most farmers harvest their crops once a year, adding that the Agrimed scheme was flexible as farmers will only contribute a small percentage deducted from their earning from grain deliveries. “We will deduct a certain percentage, which will cover one’s medical aid scheme for one year. This medical aid scheme is not compulsory and is open to those willing to be members.”
