GOVERNMENT is going ahead with its plans to relocate Kariba Airport to a new site to accommodate more aircrafts into the resort town.

This was revealed by Transport and Infrastructural Development minister Felix Mhona during the launch of the fastjet flights in Kariba last week.

He said the move was meant to accommodate a wide range of aircraft, adding that it would also bring back Kariba to its former glory of being a tourism power house.

“Government, through my ministry, identified a new site for the relocation of this airport. Relocating the airport to a new site will accommodate a wide range of aircraft and promote Kariba as a tourist destination,” Mhona said.

He said government would continue to support the aviation industry and the development of a new airport in Kariba was key to the overall growth of Zimbabwe.

Tourism Business Council president Vengai Nhau encouraged stakeholders in Kariba to work with aviation stakeholders in making sure the present airport remains operational in the interim.

“We are encouraging stakeholders in Kariba to work with aviation stakeholders in making sure the airport remains operational,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kariba Tourism and Business Indaba co-ordinator Cephas Shonhiwa has bemoaned the state of the road linking Harare and Kariba, saying there was need for government to revamp the road if tourism in the resort town is to improve.

“The road from Harare to Kariba needs revamping .We urge the government to intervene as this will create more traffic to Kariba and also reduce accidents,” he said.
