GOVERNMENT is facing resource challenges to implement and monitor United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) meant to improve the quality of life.SDGs or the 2030 Agenda promotes sustainable development, for example, in education, health and development.
Addressing delegates yesterday at a Farming Community Educational Trust (Facet) workshop in Harare, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare ministry representative Tawanda Chitambara said government had inadequate resources to implement SDGs and monitor their progress.
“There is insufficient time and disaggregated data for most indicators, making it difficult to track and monitor progress,” Chitambara said.
“There are inadequate resources for the implementation and monitoring of SDGs and low levels of their awareness. The country experienced different shocks in the form of drought, floods, cyclones, and the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with macroeconomic risks, and implementation of SDGs was affected,” he added.
Women’s groups such as the Girls Education Advocacy in the Region Alliance, consisting over 20 civil society organisations such as Family Bonds Foundation, World Vision, Students And Youth Working on Reproductive Health Action Team and Forum for African Women Educationalists Zimbabwe chapter, among others, however, pledged commitment to assist government in implementing, monitoring and evaluating SDGs.
