GWERU, March 12 (NewsDayLive) – Gweru mayor Martin Chivhoko has blamed costly sewer blockages on residents who dump dead pets, sanitary waste and disused kitchen utensils in sewer manholes.
Addressing an ordinary council meeting on Wednesday, Chivhoko appealed to residents to stop the practice and follow proper waste disposal procedures.
“We are experiencing challenges with sewer blockages often caused by improper disposal of waste,” he said.
“We have retrieved items such as dogs, sanitary products and kitchen utensils from our sewer lines, which is not only expensive to resolve but also poses health risks.
“We urge residents to dispose of waste properly and to refrain from dumping hazardous materials down the drains.”
Chivhoko said council had cleared several dump sites around the city and was now following its normal refuse collection schedule.
“However, we sometimes face challenges and appreciate the understanding by residents.”
We encourage residents to report any dump sites and refrain from creating new ones,”he said.
Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association director Cornelia Selipiwe weighed in, urging residents to desist from contributing to sewer blockages.
“Surely you would expect any normal person not to dump dogs, spoons, blankets and any other undesirable material in sewer lines,” Selipiwe said.
